Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’ Reveals First Plot Details, Which Evoke ‘The Strangers’

Peele’s follow-up to “Get Out” stars “Black Panther” co-stars Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke.

Jordan Peele’s “Us” has remained a mystery since Universal Pictures first announced the project in May, but the film is coming a bit more into focus with the reveal of its plot synopsis. “Us” is one of the most highly anticipated films of 2019 as it represents Peele’s first directorial effort since the critical and commercial success of “Get Out,” which earned four Academy Award nominations and won Peele the Best Original Screenplay prize.

The “Us” plot synopsis has been exclusively revealed by /Film, which also notes the movie is starting to test screen. The storyline reads: “A mother (Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o from ‘Black Panther,’ ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi,’ and ’12 Years a Slave’) and a father (Winston Duke from ‘Black Panther’) take their kids to their beach house expecting to unplug and unwind with friends (including Emmy winner Elisabeth Moss from TV series ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’). But as night descends, their serenity turns to tension and chaos when some shocking visitors arrive uninvited.”

The basic plot synopsis sounds like Peele is cooking up a riff on the home invasion horror subgenre, which includes titles like “The Strangers.” Peele has been vocal about following-up “Get Out” with more films he refers to as “social thrillers,” so it’s safe to assume the script factors issues of race and class into the well-worn home invasion genre. At the very least, the chance to see “Black Panther” co-stars Nyong’o and Duke as a couple thrown into hell sounds enticing.

“I think this movie’s gonna be really good,” Moss told IndieWire in a recent interview. “ It’s just gonna be really good, and that’s it…It’s true to what Jordan wants to make, which are these thought-provoking popcorn movies.”

Speaking to GQ earlier this year, Duke teased the project by saying, “Jordan [Peele] is a beautiful mind, and an incredible talent, and an incredible director. It was beautiful. I think it’ll be a wonderful conversation piece for 2019. It’s definitely a Jordan Peele-brand movie. It’s a thoughtful, psychological, impactful experience. Peeleian–that’s gonna become a word in the film lexicon very soon. You’re gonna say, ‘Aw, man, this feels very Jordan Peeleian.'”

Universal Pictures will release “Us” in theaters nationwide March 15, 2019.

Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’: Star Elisabeth Moss Promises Secretive Film Will Be Another ‘Thought-Provoking Popcorn Movie’

The star of the Oscar winner’s next social thriller can’t say much, but Moss did hint to IndieWire that the film is going to please plenty of “Get Out” fans.

Oscar winner Jordan Peele has been hammering away on the new projects after making his feature debut with last year’s critical and commercial hit “Get Out,” but few are as anticipated as his second film “Us,” a new “social-horror thriller” that has been kept under wraps since it was announced last May.

Even the film’s IMDb page notes that the plot is “unknown,” but there have been a handful of hints as to what’s to come, from early casting announcements of co-leads Elisabeth Moss and Lupita Nyong’o to an intriguing teaser poster. The pair will also be joined by “Black Panther” breakout Winston Duke, Kara Hayward, and Tim Heidecker.

Star Moss recently debuted “Her Smell” at TIFF this past week, where she was already getting hit with the inevitable queries about the film. While the actress is not able to say much about a project that has been secretive from the start, she was effusive in what she was able to share.

“All I can kind of say is, I’m obviously a huge fan of ‘Get Out,’ as is the rest of the world, and I think this movie’s gonna be really good,” Moss told IndieWire in a recent interview. “I just think it’s gonna be good. It’s just gonna be really good, and that’s it.”

Moss also assured fellow fans of “Get Out” that the film will likely feel like a companion piece to the Oscar nominee, as both films are a reflection of Peele’s unique vision. “It’s true to what Jordan wants to make, which are these thought-provoking popcorn movies,” she said.

The actress and rising producer has worked with a wide variety of directors over the course of her career, from her frequent collaborator Alex Ross Perry to Reed Morano and Lawrence Kasdan, but she seemed especially thrilled by Peele’s on-set style, particularly when it comes to the way he works with his actors.

“He really is a great director, like, a great actor’s director,” she said. “I think just being an [fellow] actor doesn’t even make you able to do that. It is a very specific skill, and it’s also the ability to not say things sometimes. He does this wonderful thing where he’s like, if you ask him a question, and you’re like, ‘Should I do it like this?’ and he doesn’t know, he’s just like, ‘I don’t know. Let’s try it.’ He makes it very safe and fun. He’s awesome.”

Universal Pictures will release “Us” on March 15, 2019.

Jordan Peele’s Next Film Is ‘Us’: Elisabeth Moss, Lupita Nyong’o in Talks to Star

Universal Pictures will release the movie in theaters March 15, 2019.

Jordan Peele has officially announced his next film: “Us.” The “Get Out” director and Oscar-winning screenwriter made the announcement on his social media pages and accompanied the news with the film’s teaser poster. The poster is a black-and-white Rorschach test, which indicates Peele has another psychological thriller up his sleeve.

Details on “Us” are under wraps for now, but sources tell Variety that Peele is speaking with Elisabeth Moss and Lupita Nyong’o to play the film’s co-leads. “Black Panther” breakout Winston Duke is also in talks to star in the movie. The project is the first one Peele is developing under his new first-look deal with Universal Pictures. Peele also wrote the film.

“Us” marks Peele’s second feature after the critical and commercial success of “Get Out” in 2017. The horror film earned Peele the Oscar for best original screenplay and was also nominated for best picture, best director, and best actor. “Get Out” grossed $225 million worldwide.

In addition to “Us,” Peele is also executive producing the upcoming “Twilight Zone” reboot on CBS All Access and HBO’s “Lovecraft Country” with J.J. Abrams.

Universal Pictures has dated “Us” for release on March 15, 2019.
