‘The Sinner’ Gets a Season 3 – and Matt Bomer – From USA

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

USA has renewed “The Sinner” for a third season with Matt Bomer coming aboard to star opposite Bill Pullman.

The third season follows Detective Harry Ambrose (Pullman) as he begins a routine investigation of a tragic car accident on the outskirts of Dorchester, in upstate New York. Ambrose uncovers a hidden crime that pulls him into the most dangerous and disturbing case of his career.

Bomer will play Jamie, an upstanding Dorchester resident and expectant father who looks to Ambrose for support in the wake of an accident.

The first two seasons starred Jessica Biel and Carrie Coon, respectively, with Pullman’s Detective Ambrose appearing in both. Derek Simonds will return as showrunner and executive producer, with Biel, Michelle Purple, Charlie Gogolak and Willie Reale as executive producers. Adam Bernstein (“Fargo,” “Breaking Bad”) is set to direct the first two episodes and will also executive produce.

For Bomer “The Sinner” will be a return to USA, where he starred for six seasons as con-artist Neil Caffrey on “White Collar.” He currently stars in DC Universe’s “Doom Patrol” as Larry Trainor/Negative Man, and has appeared in FX’s “American Horror Story” and co-starred opposite Kelsey Grammar on Amazon’s short-lived “The Last Tycoon.” He also had a season-long guest role on NBC’s “Will & Grace.”

On the film side, Bomer credits include “Papi Chulo,” “The Nice Guys,” “The Magnificent Seven” and the “Magic Mike” franchise.

‘Psych: The Movie 2’ Set at USA for Late 2019

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

USA has finally given the go-ahead to a second “Psych” movie, with all of the original cast members on board to return.

“Psych: The Movie 2” is slated for a “late 2019” premiere, the network announced on Thursday, with James Roday, Dulé Hill, Maggie Lawson, Kirsten Nelson, Corbin Bernsen and Tim Omundson all set to return.

A follow-up to 2017’s “Psych: The Movie,” itself a follow-up to the detective dramedy that ran for eight seasons on USA, the new film will pick up after Santa Barbara Police Chief Carlton Lassiter (Omundson) is ambushed on the job and left for dead. In what’s described as “a vintage ‘Psych’-style Hitchcockian nod,” he begins to see impossible happenings around his recovery clinic.

Per the network, “Shawn (Roday) and Gus (Hill) return to Lassie’s side in Santa Barbara and are forced to navigate the personal, the professional, and possibly the supernatural. Separated from their new lives in San Francisco, our heroes find themselves unwelcome in their old stomping grounds as they secretly untangle a twisted case without the benefit of the police, their loved ones, or the quality sourdough bakeries of the Bay Area. What they uncover will change the course of their relationships forever.”

Production on the new film is set to begin in March, following scheduling delays caused by Roday’s role on ABC’s freshman drama “A Million Little Things” and Hill’s role on the final season of “Suits.”

Series creator Steve Franks will direct the film, which he co-wrote with Roday and Andy Berman. Franks, Chris Henze of Thruline Entertainment, Roday and Hill are executive producers.

TV Line first reported the news of the second film.

‘Pearson’: Watch the First Trailer for ‘Suits’ Spinoff Starring Gina Torres (Video)

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

USA has dropped the first trailer for “Pearson,” its “Suits” spinoff led by Gina Torres as she takes her character, powerhouse lawyer Jessica Pearson, from New York City to the “down and dirty” world of Chicago politics.

The trailer re-introduces “Homeland” alum Morgan Spector as Chicago Mayor Bobby Novak, who appoints the recently disbarred Jessica as his right hand fixer. Per the network, “Jessica is quickly embroiled in a crooked and dangerous new world where every action has far-reaching consequences. With her compulsion to win, Jessica is forced to reconcile her unstoppable drive with her desire to do the right thing – two things very much at odds.”

The ensemble drama also stars “One Tree Hill” alum Bethany Joy Lenz, Simon Kassianides, Eli Goree, Isabel Arraiza and Chantel Riley. No premiere date for the spinoff has been set by the network.

The new trailer comes just a few days after USA announced that “Suits” would end following its upcoming ninth season.

‘Suits’ Creator Says Chances of a Meghan Markle ‘Pearson’ Cameo Are ‘Pretty Close to Zero’

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

Are you wondering if Meghan Markle aka the Duchess of Sussex is going to pop up on USA Network’s upcoming “Suits” spinoff, “Pearson”? So were reporters at the Television Critics Association winter press tour Tuesday. And no, we didn’t get a straight answer exactly. But we did get some chuckles and a “close to zero” response from the show’s creator.

“Anybody from ‘Suits’ expected to pop up, like Meghan Markle, maybe?” a journalist asked the “Pearson” creators and cast, referencing the former USA-drama-star-turned-princess.

“Who?” Gina Torres — who plays the spinoff’s lead, Jessica Pearson —  responded jokingly of her former co-star and now member of the British Royal Family, to laughter from the team on stage and reporters in the audience.

“Simon [Kassianides]’s English, so he’s going to get her back,” “Suits” creator Aaron Korsh added, referencing one of the “Pearson” cast members, to more laughter.

After the “Pearson” panel, Korsh expanded on his answer with a smaller group of reporters, telling TheWrap: “We’re not currently pursuing asking Meghan Markle to leave her position with the Royal Family and join us. I would love it, but I think it’s pretty close to zero.”

Markle starred on “Suits” — which was just renewed for a ninth and final season — as paralegal-turned-lawyer Rachel Zane from 2011 to 2018. She exited the show during the Season 7 finale in April 2018, along with her co-star Patrick J. Adams (who played Mike Ross), after their two characters tied the knot and moved away for new jobs in Seattle.

In reality, Markle retired from acting due to her engagement and subsequent marriage to Prince Harry.

Torres stars on “Pearson,” which will follow the titular “Suits” character as she adjusts to Chicago politics. During Season 7, Jessica left New York and for Chicago.

The drama comes from Universal Cable Productions (UCP). Daniel Arkin will serve as executive producer and showrunner. Torres, Doug Liman, David Bartis and Gene Klein of Hypnotic will also executive produce.

Rosario Dawson-Led ‘Briarpatch’ Anthology Lands Series Order at USA Network

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

USA Network has given a series order to anthology drama “Briarpatch” from “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail, that will star Rosario Dawson.

The first season is based on Ross Thomas’ novel of the same name, which sees Dawson playing a gender-swapped version of Thomas’ lead character, Ben Dill.

Dawson plays Allegra Dill, a dogged investigator returning to her border-town Texas home after her sister is murdered. What begins as a search for a killer turns into an all-consuming fight to bring her corrupt hometown to its knees. The season celebrates the beloved genres represented by Thomas’ book — a stylish blend of crime and pulp fiction — while updating his sense of fun, danger and place for a new generation.

The season also stars Jay R. Ferguson, Brian Geraghty and Edi Gathegi. The first season will shoot in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Dawson will also serve as a producer. On TV, Dawson is known recently for playing Claire Temple on Netflix’s Marvel-produced shows including “Daredevil,” “Luke Cage,” “Iron Fist,” “Jessica Jones” and “The Defenders.”

“When we were first introduced to the anthology by Andy Greenwald, UCP and Paramount Television, we were immediately struck by the show’s unique tone and captivating story,” said Chris McCumber, president, entertainment networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. “And Sam Esmail’s incomparable vision and style, coupled with Rosario Dawson’s tremendous performance as Allegra Dill, will no doubt leave audiences buzzing.”

Andy Greenwald, who UCP also signed to an overall deal, adapted “Briarpatch” for television and will executive produce along with “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail through his production company Esmail Corp and Anonymous Content’s Chad Hamilton. Universal Cable Productions and Paramount Television will produce. Ana Lily Amirpour directed the pilot and also served as an executive producer.

The pick-up comes ahead of the fourth and final season of “Mr. Robot.”

109 Cable Channels Ranked by 2018 Viewership, From Fox News to Comedy.TV

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

Somehow, mercifully, 2018 is almost over. Before we bid it goodbye and dive into a (hopefully) much better 2019, let’s look back at how the year treated our favorite cable channels.

For the third year in a row, Fox News Channel was the most-watched network on cable, according to Nielsen ratings. That claim holds true for both primetime (8 p.m. to 11 p.m.) and total day (6 a.m. to 6 a.m.). ESPN was again runner-up.

Thanks to midterm elections, Fox News rose about 2.5 percent year over year. ESPN declined.

MSNBC, HGTV and USA Network rounded out the top five primetime cable channels. TBS, TNT, History, Hallmark and ID make it an even top 10.

Something called Comedy.TV ranked dead last in the study, which encompassed 109 networks.

The below Nielsen rankers are in thousands, which means Fox News averaged 2.482 million primetime viewers. Comedy.TV averaged 1,000 total viewers for the same hours.

USA’s ‘Temptation Island’ Trailer Promises Plenty of Tears and Cheating, Probably (Video)

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

“Temptation Island” is back with a new trailer to prove that time has not dulled the drama of this exercise in heteronormativity.

USA’s reboot of the once-controversial reality dating series will drop four new couples into a resort full of attractive singles, where they will go on dates with other people before deciding “whether to commit to a lifetime together – or ultimately give in to the temptation.”

Also Read: USA to Revive ‘Temptation Island’ With Original Host Returning

“Temptation Island” will, shockingly, probably not go well for at least a few of these couples, judging by the amount of crying and hot tub canoodling going on in the trailer. At one point in the clip, one of the distraught temptees wonders aloud, “How is this happening?” as though this isn’t exactly what she signed up for.

But hey, if anybody can make it work, it’s probably Javen and Shari, whose bio includes the words “Shari still can’t get over the fact that Javen cheated on her in college,” or Kaci and her boyfriend Evan, who can’t figure out why he can’t bring himself to propose even though they’ve been together for a full decade. Karl and Nicole fell for each other while she was seeing someone else, but here’s hoping this time will be different.

Or maybe John and Kady will be the ones to resist temptation. After all, they do claim to “balance each other out and push one another to be the best versions of themselves” in their bio. Although, that sentence is immediately followed by the caveat, “Kady constantly questions John’s masculinity and has always wanted an ‘Alpha guy.’” Yikes.

USA Network has booked a trip to “Temptation Island.”

Original host Mark L. Walberg will return to host the reboot of the Fox dating series, which is set to premiere a 10-episode series on Tuesday, Jan. 15.

Debuting in 2001, “Temptation Island” took four couples and forced them to decide if they are ready to commit to one another for the rest of their lives or should go their separate ways. Each couple was split up and sent to live with a group of attractive singles in a tropical paradise.

The instantly controversial series became a pop culture phenomenon in its first season but struggled in the ratings throughout the rest of its short run. Now, Banijay Studios North America is betting that TV’s revival fever will extend to the short-lived reality series.

“In a period of revival television, the return of ‘Temptation Island,’ a show that leapt onto the scene with equal parts ratings bang and media attention, makes all the sense in the world,” said Banijay Studios North America CEO David Goldberg. “‘Temptation Island’ retains key format elements, but a concerted effort was made to populate the island with singles genuinely looking for love whose personalities are appealing to the four couples who are questioning the long term viability of their relationships. ‘Temptation Island’ has never been more relevant because in so many ways it mirrors the way singles and couples navigate today’s myriad of options to connect.”

“Our reboot of ‘Temptation Island’ is sure to spark intrigue, debate and conversation for a whole new generation of viewers,” said Chris McCumber, president, Entertainment Networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment.

Goldberg and Caroline Baumgard of Banijay will serve as executive producers on the series alongside Scott Jeffress.

‘Homecoming’: Yes — Sam Esmail Knows the Geist Group Looks a Lot Like ‘Mr Robot’s’ E-Corp

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

(Warning: This story contains spoilers for the first season of Amazon’s “Homecoming.”)

If the Geist Group, the large monolithic company at the center of Amazon’s “Homecoming,” reminds you of another big, shadowy company from a Sam Esmail-led series, well, the “Mr. Robot” creator gets it.

“If I have to psychoanalyze myself, I would say there are a lot of similarities,” Esmail tells TheWrap after we pointed out how similar the two companies appear. The only real differences between the two are that Esmail came up with E Corp himself, while The Geist Group was something already baked into “Homecoming,” as it was adapted from the Gimlet Media podcast from Micah Bloomberg and Eli Horowitz.

“I just think there’s something in the air right now, something in the world that’s going on where we have this untrustworthiness with powerful conglomerates,” Esmail said. “In that way, even though it resonates on a personal level, I do feel like it’s a relevant topic to explore.”

Geist Group is the company backing the Homecoming project, which ends up developing an experimental drug that “cures” veterans of PTSD by physically erasing painful memories. While it’s initially stated that its purpose is to help veterans transition back to civilian life, the twist is that Geist is doing this in order to send them back out into the field. In “Mr. Robot,” E Corp – or Evil Corp, as its derogatorily referred to by Rami Malek’s Elliot – is a nefarious giant conglomerate. The company, essentially a combination between Apple and Merrill Lynch, is frequently the target of the hacker group fsociety.

The similarities don’t stop there. “Mr. Robot” and “Homecoming” both feature major plotlines that deal with someone attempting to take down these giant companies. In “Homecoming,” after Heidi Bergman (Julia Roberts) realizes what Geist is up to, she drugs herself and one of the soldiers she was working with, so he ends up getting sent home instead back to war. In “Mr. Robot,” fsociety succeeded in hacking all of E Corp’s files, essentially wiping out all consumer debt at the end of the first season, with subsequent seasons dealing with the fallout.

In case you think Geist Group is the runaway winner in the “evil giant company” race, with its memory-erasing drugs and lying to war veterans, it is revealed during the first season of “Mr. Robot” that E Corp covered up a toxic gas spill at one of its factories, and in the ensuing 24 months, 26 employees there ended up getting leukemia, including Elliot’s father, Edward (Christian Slater).

But while E Corp was definitely something that Esmail designed, Geist Group was more of a happy coincidence. “For me, what resonated were the characters and the journey they go on and the themes that Eli and Micah explore in such a human way,” he said of his reason for taking on “Homecoming.” But we’d bet writing about a shadowy company that’s pulling the strings behind the scenes didn’t hurt, either.

“It resonated with me four years ago when I first wrote ‘Mr. Robot. I feel like since then its only amplified.”

Canadian Officials Have Heard Tape of Jamal Khashoggi Murder, Justin Trudeau Says

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

Canadian intelligence officers have heard the Turkish audio recording of Jamal Khashoggi being killed at the Saudi consulate, Prime Minster Justin Trudeau revealed on Monday.

“Yes,” Trudeau said, when asked at a press conference in Paris if Canadian authorities had heard the recordings.

Trudeau’s announcement is the first time a western leader has confirmed the tape exists, after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he’d shared it with several countries. Trudeau said he had not personally listened to the recordings.

“Canada’s intelligence agencies have been working very closely on this issue with Turkish intelligence and Canada has been fully briefed on what Turkey had to share,” Trudeau said.

Trudeau didn’t elaborate on what is on the recordings. Khashoggi — a Washington Post journalist critical of the ruling Saudi royal family — was killed on Oct. 2 after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The Saudi regime initially feigned it had no idea what happened to Khashoggi after he entered the consulate, despite his disappearance. After an international outcry, Saudi authorities eventually conceded Khashoggi was murdered inside the consulate — but denied Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and the royal family were behind the killing.

The audio recordings carry increased significance as Erdogan has been pushing for Saudi Arabia to let Turkey prosecute the culprits.

‘Bourne’ Spinoff Series Casts Alums of ‘Sense8,’ ‘Mamma Mia 2’ as Leads

USA has cast the two leads of its upcoming “Bourne” spinoff series “Treadstone,” the network said Thursday.

Jeremy Irvine, who recently played a young Pierce Brosnan in “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” will play J. Randolph Bentley in the series, a spy dispatched by the CIA to eliminate a key target, but ends up embroiled in an international conspiracy. “Sense8” alum Brian J. Smith will play Doug McKenna, an all-American oil-rig worker whose life changes after he discovers long buried truths about himself. Both are series regulars.

“Treadstone,” a TV spinoff of Universal’s “Bourne” film franchise that starred Matt Damon, will explore the origin story and present-day actions of a CIA black ops program known as Treadstone — a covert operation that uses behavior modification protocol to turn its agents into nearly unstoppable superhuman assassins.

Irvine is next set to star in Alice Waddington’s “Paradise Hills” opposite Emma Roberts and Mila Jovovich. His previous credits include Steven Spielberg’s “War Horse,” “Billionaire Boys Club” and “The Professor and the Madman” opposite Sean Penn and Mel Gibson. He is represented by UTA, Independent Talent Group and Schreck Rose Dapello Adams Berlin & Dunham.

Smith recently starred as in Netflix’s “Sense8,” following other TV roles including Syfy’s “Stargate Universe,” “Gossip Girl” and “Quantico.” He is represented by Innovative Artists and Principal Entertainment LA.

From Universal Cable Productions, “Treadstone” is written and executive produced by Tim Kring. Ramin Bahrani, who will direct the pilot, will also serve as an executive producer. Ben Smith and Jeffrey Weiner will executive produce on behalf of Captivate; Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas will executive produce on behalf of Imperative Entertainment; and Justin Levy will executive produce.

The original series of films, based on Robert Ludlow’s novels of the same name, included “The Bourne Identity,” “The Bourne Supremacy” and “The Bourne Ultimatim.” A spinoff set in the same universe, “The Bourne Legacy,” starred Jeremy Renner and was released in 2012, before Damon returned to the role in 2016’s “Jason Bourne.”

Jamal Khashoggi’s Family Joins Twitter, Calls for ‘Impartial’ Investigation Into Disappearance

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

The children of missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who Turkish officials said was killed in a gruesome attack inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul two weeks ago, have joined Twitter and are calling for an independent investigation into his disappearance.

“The strong moral and legal responsibility which our father instilled in us obliges us to call for the establishment of an independent and impartial international commission to inquire into the circumstances of his death,” tweeted the new account for Abdullah Jamal Khashoggi, the journalist’s son, on behalf of his family on Monday.

In a followup tweet, the account linked to a Washington Post story with a statement saying the family was “sadly and anxiously” following the news of his disappearance.

Khashoggi has been missing since Oct. 2, when he entered the Saudi consulate to obtain paperwork for his upcoming marriage. His fiancé, Hatice Cengiz, was left waiting outside the consulate for hours. A prominent critic of the Saudi royal family, Khashoggi has lived in exile in Virginia and was a writer for the Washington Post.

Turkish officials told the New York Times on Wednesday they have audio evidence that Khashoggi was “beheaded, dismembered” within a few minutes of entering the consulate in Istanbul. Later in the day, President Trump told reporters in the Oval Office he was skeptical of the existence of the audio.

“I’m not sure yet that it exists, probably does, possibly does,” Trump said. “I’ll have a full report on that” when Secretary of State Mike Pompeo returned from a meeting in Turkey. “That’s going to be the first question I ask.”
