Al Roker Defends Rochester Meteorologist Accused of On-Air Racial Slur

Jeremy Kappell might have lost a job, but he has gained a high-profile supporter.

Kappell, the Rochester, New York, meteorologist who was fired after being accused of uttering an on-air racial slur, was defended Wednesday by “Today” co-host Al Roker, who said that Kappell merely made an “unfortunate flub.”

“I think @JeremyKappell made an unfortunate flub and should be given the chance to apologize on @news10nbc,” Roker tweeted.

“Anyone who has done live tv and screwed up (google any number of ones I’ve done) understands,” Roker, the weather anchor for the NBC morning show, added.

In a message Monday, WHEC News10NBC general manager Richard A. Reingold accused Kappell of using a racial slur, saying that the station’s broadcast of the word “disheartens and disgusts me,” and “that it was not caught immediately is inexcusable. I regret that we did not immediately interrupt our broadcast and apologize on the spot.”

Rochester station WHAM reported that during Friday’s broadcast, Kappell “showed a photograph of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Square Park in downtown Rochester. While describing the photo, Kappell referred to the park as ‘Dr. Luther C-n King Jr. Park.’”

“As a result of that broadcast, meteorologist Jeremy Kappell is no longer with News10NBC,” Reingold said in a statement. “Our Friday broadcast does not represent the values of News10NBC, its hardworking staff, or the great people of Rochester. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is one of America’s greatest heroes – for whom I, and all of us at News10NBC, have the utmost respect. I am terribly sorry to all of our viewers. We are redoubling our efforts to ensure that this never happens again.”

In a tweet on Monday, Kappell wrote, “You are out of your mind to think I would jeopardize future of my family and career to insert a racial slur against the GREATEST civil rights leader of all time?!?!”

In subsequent tweets, Kappell characterized the moment as a “verbal slip,” a “flub” and “unintentional bubbling,” characterizations that Kappell reiterated in an interview with “Today.”

Kappell told “Today” that he inadvertently combined the words “king” and “junior.”

“Two words mashed together incorrectly. What I said wasn’t even a word, it was a sound — people, I believe, read into that,” Kappell said.

Ellen Pompeo Calls out ‘Today’ Headline: ‘Lay off the Booze and Pay Attention to the Real Conversation’

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

“Grey’s Anatomy” star Ellen Pompeo called out the “Today” show Twitter account on Tuesday, taking issue with a headline about her and former co-star Patrick Dempsey.

The headline stemmed from Pompeo’s appearance on this week’s episode on Jada Pinkett Smith’s Facebook show, “Red Table Talk,” in which the actress said she hadn’t spoken to Dempsey since he left the show in 2015.

“We haven’t spoken since he’s left the show,” Pompeo said. “I have no hard feelings toward him, he’s a wonderful actor, and we made, you know, the best TV you could make together.”

“Today” was one of several outlets to pick up Pompeo’s quotes and run a headline about Pompeo and Dempsey rather than focusing on the larger conversation about race and her experience raising biracial children.

“Hey here’s a suggestion!! Maybe all of you over there lay off the booze and pay attention to the real conversation that took place?” Pompeo wrote in response to the Twitter account for Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb’s fourth hour of “Today.”

She followed up that first tweet with another missive directed at the show’s social media team. “And whoever is in charge of this account.. the two women you work for deserve to be represented a bit more dignified,” she wrote.

Pompeo’s tweets were sent hours before Gifford announced she would be leaving the show after 11 years.

Kathie Lee Gifford to Exit ‘Today’ Show

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

Kathie Lee Gifford is leaving the “Today” show after over a decade co-hosting the fourth hour of the NBC morning staple. Her exit was announced to staff Tuesday via a memo from NBC News President Noah Oppenheim.

“It is with mixed emotions that I share the news Kathie Lee Gifford has decided it’s time to leave ‘Today,’” the NBC News chief wrote. “As we all know, Kathie Lee’s plate has been overflowing lately with film, music and book projects, and after giving us 11 extraordinary years, she’s decided to focus her attention full-time on those other creative endeavors.”

He continued: “When we first launched this incredible hour, no one could have predicted the lightning (or rather, wine) in a bottle that is Hoda & Kathie Lee. Whether in studio or on one of their many road trips, they have delighted our audience with their distinct brand of fun, friendship and adventure. During that time, Kathie Lee has cemented her status as one of the most enduring and endearing talents in morning television. In short — she is a legend.”

Oppenheim noted that Gifford “is generously staying with us through the show’s next anniversary, April 7, 2019,” adding, “We will have much more to share before then about our plans for that hour, which will, of course, continue to include Hoda.”

Gifford has been hosting the final hour of the four-hour “Today”show since 2008.

All,

It is with mixed emotions that I share the news Kathie Lee Gifford has decided it’s time to leave TODAY.

As we all know, Kathie Lee’s plate has been overflowing lately with film, music and book projects, and after giving us eleven extraordinary years, she’s decided to focus her attention full-time on those other creative endeavors.

When we first launched this incredible hour, no one could have predicted the lightning (or rather, wine) in a bottle that is Hoda & Kathie Lee. Whether in studio or on one of their many road trips, they have delighted our audience with their distinct brand of fun, friendship and adventure. During that time, Kathie Lee has cemented her status as one of the most enduring and endearing talents in morning television. In short – she is a legend.

Jimmy Fallon summed it up best when he channelled Kenny Rogers on the tenth anniversary show earlier this year: Through the years, Kathie Lee has never let us down, she’s turned our lives around and she’s brought some of the sweetest days we’ve found…

As Kathie Lee told me today: “In 2008, I joined the TODAY Show family intending to spend one year. But something unexpected happened along the way: I fell in love with a beautiful, talented, extraordinary Egyptian goddess named Hoda, and an amazing group of individuals who work tirelessly and joyfully at their jobs, many of them starting at midnight, creating an unprecedented four hours of live television. I stayed year after year making a million memories with people I will never forget. I leave TODAY with a grateful heart but I’m truly excited for this new creative season in my life. Many thanks to all the wonderful people who made the years fly by.”

Kathie Lee is generously staying with us through the show’s next anniversary, April 7, 2019. We will have much more to share before then about our plans for that hour, which will, of course, continue to include Hoda.

Please join me in congratulating Kathie Lee on a dazzling run at TODAY. We look forward to celebrating her in the months to come.

John Oliver Jokes He Landed Megyn Kelly’s ‘Today’ Gig Simply Because He Knows Blackface Is Wrong (Video)

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

John Oliver, like most people, inherently knows that blackface is wrong. That’s apparently all that was needed for him to (faux) land Megyn Kelly’s “Today” show gig.

Mocking a back-and-forth between a Republican congressional candidate’s chief of staff and an associate professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Oliver said he personally knows that “blackface is not acceptable.” Cue the NBC chimes, rainbow confetti and the broadcast network’s peacock mascot.

“Oh, God — I just won! I won! I won! I’m replacing Megyn Kelly on the ‘Today’ show!” Oliver said. “That’s all it took! What an incredibly easy standard to meet!”

That’s when the peacock sighed and got on his knees behind Oliver’s desk, pecking gently at the HBO host’s crotch.

“Oh, no, no, no, no, no!” Oliver said. “I’m not gonna be that kind of ‘Today’ show host.”

“You’ve been through a lot, haven’t you? You’ve really been through a lot,” he attempted to comfort the bird. “Just go home and you try and get some rest. It sounds rough over there.”

Earlier on last night’s “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver (again) took his new parent company, AT&T, to task. The telephone company and Time Warner (which owns HBO) parent is involved in a corporate pact with Congressman Steve King, who Oliver said has a”history of flirting with white nationalists.”

“Of course, AT&T didn’t catch on to King’s white nationalism for a long time,” he continued. “Picking up on clear signals isn’t exactly their forte.”

NBC News, Megyn Kelly’s Lawyer Trade Barbs in Public as Exit Talks Drag On

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

The exit talks between Megyn Kelly and NBC News are turning ugly, with both Kelly’s lawyer and the network criticizing each other publicly.

After Kelly’s lawyer, Bryan Freedman, slammed NBC News for “allowing the media to run with completely false and irresponsible reports that disparage Megyn,” NBC News responded with a statement of its own.

“Unlike Mr. Freedman, who has repeatedly commented to the media throughout the negotiations, we respect the confidentiality of the process, and will have no comment until it reaches its conclusion,” a network spokesperson said in a statement Wednesday.

Freedman was taking umbrage with media reports over the past few days regarding Kelly’s exit negotiations, including one in the Daily Mail that claimed Kelly was looking to recoup the full $69 million that was reportedly in her three-year contract, plus an additional $10 million as part of her exit package.

The now-former “Megyn Kelly Today” host has been working on her exit from the network following the outcry over her comments last week about wearing “blackface” on Halloween. Last Friday, NBC announced she would return to host her 9 p.m. hour of “Today.”

“Despite my efforts to handle this process confidentially, NBC News is allowing the media to run with completely false and irresponsible reports that disparage Megyn by erroneously claiming she has ever asked for more money than her contract requires,” Freedman said in a statement, per The Daily Beast’s Max Tani. “If NBC News is not the source then they have a responsibility as a news division to correct these false claims. Or are they somehow attempting to use these fabrications for some fictitious advantage in the discussions we’re having? If Andy Lack has lost control, my hope would be that Steve Burke can step in and not permit blatant lies about our discussions to remain uncorrected.”

Freedman did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Kelly herself also took a dig at the media on Wednesday, though she did not address her exit talks with NBC News.

“For a week paparazzi has been lurking outside my home day & nite. Finally today I took my kids to school. I went out alone 1st, offered them donuts &begged them to just take their pic of me & to leave my kids alone when they emerged. All were nice. Except the Dailymail…” she wrote on her twitter account. “The DailyMail 1st published photos of my husb IN OUR HOME & then *did* photog my kids, trailed us to my daughter’s school, & secretly videotaped my 7-yr-old child (her classmates too) & posted it. THIS IS NOT RIGHT.”

Megyn Kelly was unpopular with viewers even before the defense of blackface that ended her morning show, according to the Q Scores Company, one of the entertainment industry’s most-used indicators of popularity.

After the gaffe, TheWrap checked in with The Q Scores Company, which said that as of September 2018, Kelly had a Positive Q Score of 8 — the lowest among all TV news personalities.

The poll closed weeks before Kelly defended wearing blackface on Halloween, then hastily apologized for it. On Friday, NBC announced the end of “Megyn Kelly Today.”

Also Read: ‘Today’ 3rd Hour Opens Without Megyn Kelly: ‘We Are Starting a New Chapter’ (Video)

Megyn’s latest Q Score was actually up two points from April, when she had a six. But she was also in last place back then.

Q Scores measure a celebrity or brand’s likability based on semi-regular surveys. The higher the Positive Q Score, the more survey respondents marked the individual or company as being among their favorites.

Kelly’s Q Scores do not pair well with her TV ratings — NBC’s ratings during the third hour of “Today” have fallen since Kelly took it over. Her low ratings gave NBC even less incentive to defend her, or give her another chance, after the blackface comment.

Kelly is now in limbo at NBC, as the network decides whether to find her another position within NBC News, or let her go. Last year, she signed a reported $69 million, three-year contract with the network.

Now that Megyn Kelly is on her way out from “Today,” where does she go from here?

Multiple crisis PR and media experts agree that Kelly’s ouster involved her disappointing ratings, not just her defense of blackface at Halloween. While her refusal to be politically correct could make her a conservative martyr, her lack of an audience complicates any potential comeback.

As of Friday afternoon, Kelly was still employed by NBC News, which only announced that she wouldn’t return to her year-old morning show, “Megyn Kelly Today.” NBC News did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for clarification on her status with the network. Reps for Kelly did not immediately respond, either.

“Bottom line, it’s a business decision. She’s very expensive without the following,” Richard Levick, chairman of crisis management firm Levick, told TheWrap.

He added that companies have repeatedly put up with bad behavior from top employees — as long as they’re getting results: “University of Indiana would have continued to buy chairs for Bobby Knight to throw, as long as he was winning.”

But Kelly’s ratings did nothing to justify the reported three-year, $69 million contract NBC offered her last year to leave Fox News, where her primetime show was the No. 2 cable news program, behind only Bill O’Reilly’s.

“She does not come across as a good investment right now and that is going to have to change,” Levick said.

But others see a possible path to redemption.

“I think NBC jumped the gun,” said Evan Nierman, founder of the crisis PR firm Red Banyan. “They appointed themselves judge, jury and career executioner. I don’t believe this is a death sentence for her.”

But where could she go? Fox News has already signaled that it isn’t jockeying to get Kelly back. “We are extremely happy with our entire line-up,” the network said in a statement.

Kelly was among the prominent women at Fox News who came forward with accusations of sexual harassment and misconduct against late chairman Roger Ailes and star anchor Bill O’Reilly, which led the ouster of both.

Also Read: ‘Megyn Kelly Today’ ‘Is Not Returning,’ NBC Says

Her speaking out earned her respect. But Nierman said she also “ruffled a lot of feathers and burned a lot of bridges” at Fox News.

Still, he said, she could return if the network things her old audience will return with her. “Fox craves ratings. It’s not unthinkable she could end up back there,” Nierman said.

But Levick says conservatives may “view her as a traitor” for leaving Fox News for NBC, and that she may now have no home on either side of the aisle.

That may leave Kelly with a third option: Going out on her own.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television & Popular Culture at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School, argues that, at least in the short term, Kelly’s “blackface” comments make her radioactive.

“Anybody that would hire her after that would be making the PR statement that the standards that NBC had in getting rid of her are higher than theirs,” he said. “Most execs wouldn’t want to send that kind of message.”

Also Read: If Megyn Kelly Leaves ‘Today,’ NBC Won’t Miss Her Ratings

But he said Kelly could follow the lead of Glenn Beck and O’Reilly in starting up her own online media operation.

“If she could bring her entire ‘Megyn Kelly Today’ viewership to an online venture, that’s a substantial number of people,” he said.

Wednesday morning may have marked the final episode of the “Megyn Kelly Today” experiment. Should that prove to be the case, it would be the Fox News transfer’s opinions on blackface proving even more damaging than her bad TV ratings.

Since Kelly’s Halloween costume free-for-all comments have been written about to death — including here on this website — let’s analyze her Nielsen numbers, which provide absolutely no justification for NBC News to keep her on the air.

(For that matter, neither does her Q Score.)

From September 2017 to September 2018, Kelly’s 9 a.m. ET show fell 13 percent overall from its predecessor (2.8 million vs. 2.4 million), which was just a third hour of the “Today” show, hosted by Tamron Hall and Al Roker. The decline versus Septembers 2016-2017 was twice as bad on a percentage basis among adults 25-54, the key demographic for news programming.

“Megyn Kelly Today” also shed 26 percent of its viewers ages 18-49, and it was actually off two points more than that among young women.

Season over season, the time slot’s 8 a.m. lead-in, which is the second hour of “Today,” declined 10 percent in the demo and 3 percent overall. For a comparison, key competition “Good Morning America” was down 9 percent in that hour among adults 25-54 and 6 percent overall. ABC and CBS air syndicated programming versus Kelly’s hour.

“Megyn Kelly Today” got off to a particularly terrible start in terms of both reception and TV ratings, dragging 10 a.m. act Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb down in the process. However, Kelly’s ratings and profile were raised early on in the #MeToo movement when her show began booking victims of high-profile alleged sexual predators like Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey. That said, they were still down from Hall and Roker, just not down as much.

Here are her total-viewer drops per quarter when compared with the final year of the previous format:
Q4 2017: -19.49%
Q1 2018: -17.16%
Q2 2018: -9.88%
Q3 2018: -4.79%

Again, Kelly’s demo losses have unfortunately been more severe and consistent, particularly among female viewers. She has dropped more than 20 percent in each quarter among women in the key demo.

Think that’s about as bad as it gets? We haven’t even mentioned her short-lived NBC News primetime show’s performance — that would just be piling on.

With Thursday and Friday’s live “Megyn Kelly Today” episodes already being replaced by reruns and an apology tour not exactly setting critics’ minds at ease, the big question remains: Will we ever see Megyn Kelly on NBC again? We’re no oddsmakers, but the numbers certainly don’t support the idea of job security for the host.

NBC News did not take us up on our offer to participate in this story.

Megyn Kelly’s Future on ‘Today’ in Question After ‘Blackface’ Comments

Megyn Kelly’s run on daytime could be nearing an end. Kelly has met with NBC executives to discuss the future of “Megyn Kelly Today” in recent weeks, according to a New York Times report.

“Even before this week, the future of Ms. Kelly’s show was up in the air. During a meeting this month, Ms. Kelly and [NBC News Chairman Andy] Lack discussed a possible winding-down of her portion of the ‘Today’ show by the end of the year, according to two people briefed on the conversation. And Ms. Kelly has expressed among friends her dissatisfaction with its top news executives,” the Times reported Wednesday.

But during a town hall meeting Wednesday with NBC employees, Lack condemned Kelly’s defense of wearing blackface on Halloween to NBC News employees, calling her remarks “unfortunate,” according to The Daily Beast.

Lack also applauded NBC Nightly News’ coverage of her comments. “I think that ‘Nightly’ covered the story well last night and appropriately so. I think this morning on the ‘Today’ show, the team did an excellent job covering it properly. I thought Craig and Al brought a thoughtfulness and a context to it that was sorely missing and they really did this company and our audience a real public service,” Lack said, according to Daily Beast. “And that is the ‘Today’ show and ‘Nightly’ at their very best. As we go forward, my highest priority remains, and as we sort through this with Megyn, let there be no doubt that this is a workplace in which you need to be proud and in which we respect each other in all the ways we know is foundational to who we are.”

Reps for NBC News, “Today,” and Kelly did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Kelly’s future on the “Today” show came under media scrutiny after she defended wearing blackface for Halloween earlier this week on her show.

“What is racist?” Kelly asked. “You get in trouble if you’re a white person who puts on blackface on Halloween or a black person who puts on whiteface for Halloween. When I was a kid that was OK as long as you were dressing up as a character.”

She later apologized to her colleagues in an email, obtained by TheWrap, saying that she now realizes the wearing blackface is wrong.

“One of the wonderful things about my job is that I get the chance to express and hear a lot of opinions,” Kelly began her email, which was addressed to “friends & teammates.” “Today is one of those days where listening carefully to other points of view, including from friends and colleagues, is leading me to rethink my own views.”

“I realize now that such behavior is indeed wrong,” she said of wearing blackface, “I am sorry.”

Nonetheless, her comments created an uproar online and in the media, and “NBC Nightly News” dedicated a full segment Tuesday evening to Kelly’s comments.

“NBC’s Megyn Kelly issued an apology tonight to her staff after she defended the idea of wearing blackface for Halloween,” Lester Holt said. “Her comments came during a panel discussion on her program this morning quickly sparking a backlash over remarks many viewed as racially tone deaf.”

Though only about 90 seconds, the segment packed a punch — including criticism from outsiders like television host Padma Lakshmi — and a “this isn’t the first time” moment where the piece also hit Kelly for her 2013 remarks on Fox News asserting that Santa Claus was “white.”

Additionally, Kelly’s ratings have been slipping even before her comments on Monday.

As the NYT pointed out, her hour of “Today” has averaged 2.4 million viewers, which according to Nielsen data is a drop of about 400,000 from before she took over.
