Trump Nominates Former CNN Contributor Stephen Moore to Federal Reserve Board

President Donald Trump nominated Stephen Miller, a former CNN contributor and campaign advisor, to the Federal Reserve Board, he announced in a tweet on Friday.

“It is my pleasure to announce that @StephenMoore, a very respected Economist, will be nominated to serve on the Fed Board,” Trump tweeted. “I have known Steve for a long time — and have no doubt that he will be an outstanding choice!”

Moore, who is a visiting fellow at the Heritage Foundation, co-authored a 2018 book titled, “Trumponomics: Inside the America First Plan to Revive Our Economy.” He was also a CNN contributor until recently.

CNN did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday. However, CNN media reporter Brian Stelter tweeted on Friday that Moore was no longer with the network.

Moore joined CNN as a contributor in early 2017. Given this news, he is no longer with the network, a CNN spokeswoman confirms.

— Brian Stelter (@brianstelter) March 22, 2019

Last week, Moore, who is a member of the Wall Street Journal editorial board, wrote an op-ed titled “The Fed Is a Threat to Growth,” which criticized the Fed for its rate hikes.

Moore is the latest television personalities to be appointed by Trump for a government post, joining Larry Kudlow, Heather Nauert, John Bolton and former Fox News co-president Bill Shine.

A CNN panel in January got heated after Moore suggested that federal workers were treating the government shutdown as a “paid vacation.”

Trump repeatedly slammed the Fed, specifically its chairman, Jerome Powell, his own appointee, for raising rates four times last year.

On Friday, Trump renewed his attack on the Fed, telling Fox Business that the country’s gross domestic product would have been higher had it not been for the interest rate spikes.

“If we didn’t have somebody raising interest rates and do quantitative tightening we would have been over 4 [percent] instead of at 3.1 [percent],” Trump told host Maria Bartiromo. “I’m not happy with it.”

It is my pleasure to announce that @StephenMoore, a very respected Economist, will be nominated to serve on the Fed Board. I have known Steve for a long time – and have no doubt he will be an outstanding choice!

Kellyanne Conway Chides George Conway Over Trump Criticism: ‘Air Grievances Like That in Private’

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

White House counsellor Kellyanne Conway addressed the growing spat between her husband and the President of the United States on Thursday, telling Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo that George Conway was behaving in a way contrary to how she she was raised.

“I was raised in a household of strong Italian Catholic women that taught me you air grievances like that in private,” Conway said. “So it is very surprising to see it be so public.”

“My husband also has been very critical of the president publicly, which is unlike him,” Conway continued. “He’s traditionally been a very private person. In 2016, which was known as the year of the tweet, George Conway sent exactly zero tweets. So this is new. And what also is new is not supporting the agenda of the president and my work there.”

An infrequent Twitter user before Trump took office, George Conway has exploded in recent years as one of the president’s chief critics on the platform. His proximity to Kellyanne Conway has amplified his voice and made for frequent fodder in the national media.

The president had historically pulled his punches with George Conway given the awkwardness of the situation — something that dramatically changed this month. After Conway suggested Trump was suffering from Narcissistic Personality Disorder, the billionaire finally struck back.

“George Conway, often referred to as Mr. Kellyanne Conway by those who know him, is VERY jealous of his wife’s success & angry that I, with her help, didn’t give him the job he so desperately wanted,” Trump said in a tweet. “I barely know him but just take a look, a stone cold LOSER & husband from hell!”

“You. Are. Nuts,” Conway shot back in reply.

George Conway did not immediately respond to request for comment from TheWrap.

Kellyanne Conway has often faced awkward questions about her husband’s criticism of Trump and how that compared to her lockstep support of her boss. In an interview with CNN last April, she suggested that inquiries into the matter were sexist.

“It’s fascinating to me that CNN would go there. But it’s very good for the whole world to have just witnessed … that it’s now fair game what people’s — how people’s spouses and significant others may differ with them. I’m really surprised, but very, in some ways, relieved and gratified to see that,” she responded to Dana Bash, adding that it was not a question Bash would have asked if she were a man.

Bash refuted her on air saying “a thousand percent, I would.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Calls Out Fox News for Mispronouncing Her Name

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez went after Fox News Wednesday evening, taking the network to task over what she said were repeated instances of mispronouncing her name.

“Fox News likes to say my name (incorrectly) as ‘Cortez,’ which I can only imagine is bc that sounds more ‘stereotypically’ Hispanic + probably incites more ‘anxiety’ for them,” Ocasio-Cortez said in a tweet. “My last name is not “Cortez,” just as theirs isn’t “Ingra” or “Carl” or “Hann.”

“My last name is Ocasio-Cortez. Full stop. That’s my name. No, you can’t say ‘Cortez.’ I’ve never used that in my life. ‘Cortez’ is referring to someone else. Even if they’re trying to be rude + wrong, my dad’s last name was Ocasio anyway,” she continued.

“For the curious, in Latinx culture children take *both* their parents’ names. It’s not a ‘progressive, new thing.’ It’s just how some names work. PR hyphenates, others mark differently. Your last name = the families that came together to make you. AOC is also fine though.”

The tweets from AOC were inspired by a segment on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” Wednesday evening when regular guest Joe diGenova mocked Ocasio-Cortez’s way of speaking.

“She does the Latina thing where she does her, you know, ‘Anastasio Ocasio-Cortez,” he said misstating her name while employing an exaggerated accent. “I assume she’s going to love that when I do that,” he added with Ingraham laughing along.

The incident was the latest sparring between the network and AOC. Skirmishes between the two have now become a near daily occurrence in some form or another. In the past channel luminaries like Brit Hume have disparaged her as “like a five-year-old” while frequent guest Ed Rollins attacked her plans to return to pre-Reagan tax rates by calling her “a little girl.”

Reps for both Fox News and the Congresswoman did not immediately respond to request for comment from TheWrap over the latest kerfuffle.

Democratic Presidential Candidate John Hickenlooper Recalls Taking His Mom to See ‘Deep Throat’ (Video)

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

Former Colorado governor John Hickenlooper recalled a surprising moment during a CNN town hall Wednesday evening telling, an audience on live television that he once took his mother to see “Deep Throat.”

“I didn’t know what an X-movie was. We thought it was a little naughty but we didn’t think it was that bad,” the 2020 presidential candidate recalled, saying the original plan was to see the famously phonographic film with his friend. Hickenlooper invited his mother so she wouldn’t be at home lonely — never expecting she would accept his invitation.

“I was sure that she [would] say no, I made a mistake. She said ‘I’d love to go’ because she didn’t want to be left alone in the house again. So I took my mother to see ‘Deep Throat.’

“I’m sure she was mortified and I said repeatedly, ‘I think we should leave, I think we should go,’” he added, while also noting that “once she paid she was going to stay.”

Gerard Damiano’s 1972 classic is widely considered one of the most famous films of America’s “Golden Age of Porn.” The film was an early pioneer in a more sophisticated genre of pornography with bigger budgets, higher production values and more complex plot-lines. It’s name is best remembered today as the the pseudonym of Watergate leaker W. Mark Felt — who leaked critical information to Washington Post Reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein — which ultimately led to the disgrace and resignation of President Richard Nixon.

The nugget, originally from Hickenlooper’s memoir, may have been a humanizing moment for the candidate who has sometimes struggled to gain traction in a crowded field of Democratic contenders. During an appearance on “Morning Joe” earlier this month, Hickenlooper had difficulty answering whether he was a capitalist or not.

“Oh I don’t know, you know the labels, I’m not sure any of them fit,” he said. “I think right now the way that capitalism is working in the United States, it’s not doing what it once did. It’s really not providing security, opportunity, for the middle class and for poor people.”

Before he became governor, Hickenlooper himself was a successful small businessman.

‘Political Speed Dating’: Hollywood Donors Opt for 2020 Meet-and-Greets Before Signing Checks

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

Last month, surgeon Phil Mercado and Hollywood executive Todd Quinn invited over 100 of their richest friends to sip beer, drink wine, and try to fall in love. Not in a romantic sense, but with a presidential candidate.

This time it was with Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana. Previous guests at their Hollywood Hills home have included New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar and California Sen. Kamala Harris. The couple also hope to host former Vice President Joe Biden (who has not announced his candidacy) and former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke.

But no one wants to commit to anyone. “Most people want to keep their powder dry,” Mercado said.

The potential donors have the same problem as lots of Hollywood daters: There are too many attractive options, and new ones seem to pop up every day. The only thing everyone in liberal Hollywood seems to agree on is that anyone would be better than the guy they’re stuck with now.

With more than two dozen candidates either running or expected to run in the 2020 presidential race, Hollywood’s top donors are holding off on their contributions and weighing their options before making any commitments.

In 2016, the entertainment industry spent more than $86 million in donations, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, mostly on Democrats, only to see Donald Trump win the general election.

So it’s no surprise many of them are now taking a more cautious approach, according to Jack Pitney, professor of government at California’s Claremont McKenna College.

Also Read: Congressman Devin Nunes Files $250 Million Defamation Complaint Against Twitter

“It’s political speed dating,” Pitney told TheWrap. “They don’t want to spend money on a candidate who blows up or whose candidacy implodes.”

Many are trying to avoid anything serious right now, instead opting for high-powered meet-and-greets, like the one at Mercado and Quinn’s house, that don’t require anyone to sign a check to get in.

“In 2016 there was a clear frontrunner in Hillary Clinton,” Mercado said. “But this year it’s more analogous to what happened to the Republicans in the last cycle.”

For the candidates, the non-fundraising events are a chance to make their pitch to influential and wealthy supporters, while soaking up some of Hollywood’s glitz and glamour. They hope to make enough of an impression to score donations, time, or endorsements later on.

Media titan Haim Saban, a longtime Democratic Party funder and one of Hillary Clinton’s biggest donors in 2016, told TheWrap he’s “standing on the sidelines and waiting patiently to hear what everyone has to say.”

“With so many people saying so many things, it’s kind of difficult to hone in on any one person,” he said.

Saban and his wife Cheryl, a psychologist and author, donated more than $12.6 million to pro-Clinton efforts in 2016, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. But this year, he said, he may hold out until the general election before making any donations.

“I’m just going to sit back until somebody emerges who I feel shares my views of the world,” he added.

In 2016, attorney and longtime Democratic fundraiser Dana Perlman hosted “countless” events for Clinton and even canvassed for her in Iowa and Nevada. But this year, Perlman has decided to give his money directly to the the National Democratic Committee.

“I am all in with the DNC,” he told TheWrap. “Only one of them is going to  make it to the mountaintop and whoever that is I want to make sure that on Day 1 that person has the infrastructure available to her or him to immediately proceed into the general election and defeat Donald Trump.”

David Schneiderman, co-owner of Seismic Productions and longtime fundraiser, told TheWrap he too was thinking of giving his money to the party instead of the candidates.

“My allegiance changes every day,” Schneiderman said. “There are so many good candidates, it’s hard to decide.”

Schneiderman, who said he attended nine Clinton fundraisers last cycle, said he was leaning towards Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, or possibly O’Rourke. But he added that he was waiting to hear from Biden.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do,” he said. “I like a lot of people.”

Still, there are plenty of fundraisers in Hollywood these days. On Wednesday, director J.J. Abrams and his wife, producer Katie McGrath, hosted a fundraiser for Harris, an event co-chaired by some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including WME Entertainment’s Ari Emanuel, ICM’s Chris Silbermann, political consultant Jennifer Gonring, and producer Shonda Rhimes. According to an invite obtained by TheWrap, the evening reception is priced at $2,800 per person, with those who write and raise $10,000 listed as co-hosts.

Also on Wednesday, United Talent Agency’s Jay Sures hosted Sen. Klobuchar for fundraiser at his home.

No one can say how much money the 2020 candidates have raised so far. The Federal Election Commission requires candidates to file quarterly reports, and the first isn’t due until April.

Also Read: Democratic Party Nixes Fox News as Host of 2020 Presidential Primary Debates

But some of the candidates have released numbers for their first 24 hours following their announcements. So far, the person to beat is O’Rourke. The Texas Democrat announced Monday that his campaign hauled in an impressive $6.1 million in online donations in the 24 hours after his announcement. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said he raised $5.9 million from more than 223,000 donors in the first 24 hours, and Harris clocked $1.5 million in donations during her campaign’s first 24 hours.

“I think there is a lot of excitement,” Mercado said. “Kamala [Harris] is of interest to a lot of people and so is Amy [Klobuchar]. We’ll probably end up seeing a clearer picture of who the frontrunners are closer to the debates. More people will announce before then and we’ll start to see more people falling in line behind their favorites.”

Dr. Howie Mandel (not the comedian), a prominent Los Angeles-based Democratic fundraiser who has attended several meet-and -greets this cycle said he believes the wait-and-see approach is “a good thing, not bad.”

“I don’t want to give money yet,” he told TheWrap. “Besides,” he said, “Hillary Clinton had more money than God and she lost.”

In his public tweet-lashing came on Wednesday morning, Trump channeled his inner Richard Lewis by calling Conway the “husband from hell.”

The president also chided Conway for not getting a White House job he “desperately wanted.”

Conway simply retweeted Trump’s lambasting on Wednesday with the comment: “The President of the United States.”

The president’s response came after Conway criticized his wife’s boss once again on Monday, tweeting that Trump’s mental state is “getting worse.” Conway included a definition of  “Narcissistic Personality Disorder,” which mentioned that the afflicted are “preoccupied with fantasies.”

“Don’t assume that the things he says and does are part of a rational plan or strategy, because they seldom are. Consider them as a product of his pathologies, and they make perfect sense,” Conway added.
