‘Morning Joe’ Says Trump Privately Admitted Birther Attacks Were Wrong: ‘Racism in His Mind Works’

The set of “Morning Joe” offered a startling admission Monday, telling viewers that not only was Trump aware his attacks on critics were often racism, but that he admitted as much to the in private in the past.

“We confronted [Donald Trump] about the birtherism,” said show co-host Mika Brzezinski. “We said it was bad. It’s wrong and he said in a low voice ‘I know it’s bad, but it works.’ Racism in his mind works. That’s what he told us.”

Fellow co-host Joe Scarborough offered a pointed eyebrow raise and seemed a bit taken aback by the disclosure. He didn’t confirm or deny the incident on-air.

“We’ll see if it works tomorrow. I’m not so sure it will,” he said before the pair moved on. With election day around the corner, Trump’s closing argument has mostly focused on immigration fears, like a caravan of illegal migrants coming from Mexico, which critics have accused of being racist dog whistles.

Reps for the pair at MSNBC declined to comment or offer any additional details. Both Joe and Mika were known to be chummy with Trump before he became president and the show has taken heat in the past for it’s softball treatment of the billionaire in 2015.

President Trump has long been accused by critics of lobbing racist attacks against his opponents, something his defenders have been forced to deny (with varying degrees of forcefulness) over the years.

The president’s first major foray into racially charged politics came during the second term of Barack Obama, when the real estate billionaire spent years asserting that his predecessor had actually been born in Kenya and was thus not a legitimate U.S. president.

The conspiracy — known as birtherism — received a willing and receptive audience on Fox News, where Trump began making regular appearances on the network’s morning show “Fox & Friends.” In the years he spent calling into the show, he rarely faced pushback from hosts Steve Doocy, Brian Kilmeade and Ainsley Earhardt. His relationship with the program and its hosts has only become tighter since his move to the White House.

Joe Scarborough Accuses Fox News of ‘Inspiring People Like This Pittsburgh Mass Murderer’

Joe Scarborough accused Fox News on Monday morning of playing a direct role in inspiring extremists like Robert Bowers, who is accused of murdering 11 people at a Pittsburgh synagogue on Saturday.

“People on Fox News that talk about the caravan as if this is a big election issue know it’s a lie, know it’s 1,000 miles away. [They] know that the last caravan that they whipped up a frenzy about actually only brought 14 arrests by the end of the caravan.” said Scarborough on “Morning Joe.”  “They are spreading hatred across America and at the end of the day … inspiring people like this Pittsburgh mass murderer.”

Mika Brzezinski was broadly in agreement with her co-host.

“[Bowers] also frequently posted about the migrant caravan, a major talking point right-wing commentators and President Trump and his stupid followers running for Republican seats, who tend to just repeat it because they think it will work,” she said. “They know it’s a lie.”

The “Morning Joe” commentary came a day after a Financial Times editor called for a boycott of Fox News, tweeting out that such actions were the only remedy for stopping the “poison.” from the network.

“The most effective thing Americans can do is boycott companies that advertise on Fox,” said Edward Luce.  “They bankroll the poison that goes from the studio into Trump’s head. The second is vote.”

Fox News has dedicated extensive coverage to the migrant caravan and George Soros in recent weeks. Over the weekend, the network moved aggressively to pivot from that, announcing the complete ban of Chris Farrell, who told Lou Dobbs and his Fox Business audience that Soros was controlling the State Department.

“We condemn the rhetoric by the guest on ‘Lou Dobbs Tonight,’” Gary Schreier, senior vice president of programming for Fox Business Network, said in a statement. “This episode was a repeat which has now been pulled from all future airings.”

Reps for Fox News did not immediately respond to request for comment from TheWrap.

The set of “Morning Joe” officially blamed President Trump on Thursday after a series of attempted mail bomb attacks against prominent Democrats and CNN this week.

In one of several emotional “straight into the camera” monologues, Mika Brzezinski said Trump and his rhetoric made it a certainty that this day would come sooner or later.

“We don’t know who sent the packages, but I do know in my heart that President Trump bears a lot of responsibility for rhetoric that made it almost inevitable that top Democrats and the media would be targeted,” said Brzezinski. “I want to be honest, I have been highly reactive in my emotions and fears about this president.”

She then encouraged her party to remain calm and not go into the gutter with Trump.

“As Democrats, I would speak to you now and see that we need to immediately press reset,” she said. “We know that what Trump wants before the mid-terms is a brawl, a battle of conspiracy theories, unhinged accusations and violent rude behavior. Democrats. Don’t do it. Pull back. Don’t try and intimidate Republicans when they’re at public places like restaurants. Don’t do it.”

She then criticized, by name, prominent Democrats who have encouraged confrontation like California congresswoman Maxine Waters.

“A tactic explicitly encouraged by Maxine Waters. Don’t do it. Don’t do it. Don’t say it, Maxine,” she said. “Don’t get in the gutter with this man and this rhetoric. That’s what he wants.”

On Wednesday, most other news came to a standstill after a bomb was mailed to CNN as well as former president Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. The bombs delivered via the U.S. postal service were similar to one received by billionaire Democratic funder George Soros on Monday and Robert De Niro on Thursday.

For much of Wednesday, CNN reported from the streets of Manhattan after their New York bureau in the Time Warner Center was evacuated. CNN chief Jeff Zucker also stuck the blame squarely on Trump in a statement.

Joe Scarborough Calls Trump Attacks on Migrant Caravan ‘Anti-American’ and ‘Un-Christlike’

Joe Scarborough condemned President Trump’s fixation on a caravan of migrants slowly moving toward the United States from Central America, telling his audience on “Morning Joe” on Wednesday that the demonization from the White House wasn’t just un-American but un-Christian, too.

“What Donald Trump is doing is not only anti-American,” said Scarborough. “I will just say this as a guy that was raised in the southern Baptist church, at least based on the bible I read, the gospels that I read, the good samaritan story that I read, it’s un-Christ like what’s going on here.”

“History will look back and Americans will look back with shame that we ever had a president like this,” Scarborough lamented. “The statue of liberty, it’s still in New York Harbor. It’s still stands for what makes this country great. Out of many, one. That has been our history for years and years, for over 200 years.”

Though Trump — a thrice married New York City real estate billionaire — has never claimed to be a biblical scholar, he made a notable effort to reach out to Christian and evangelical voters who returned the favor by supporting him to the hilt in 2016. During a speech while a candidate, Trump told an audience at Liberty University that he was fond of the bible’s “Two Corinthians” — a mispronunciation of “Second Corinthians,” which drew laugher from the crowd.

The president’s language on the migrant caravan that began in Central America earlier this month has been much clearer. On Twitter, Trump has railed against the migrants, promoting tough Fox News coverage of the event and even warning to send the military to the border if need be.

“For those who want and advocate for illegal immigration, just take a good look at what has happened to Europe over the last 5 years. A total mess! They only wish they had that decision to make over again,” said Trump Wednesday morning in his latest pronouncement on the matter.

‘Morning Joe’ Pleads for Cabinet to Invoke 25th Amendment: Trump ‘Not Fit to Lead’

The set of “Morning Joe” offered some righteous indignation Wednesday morning, one day after President Donald Trump called adult actress Stormy Daniels “horseface”

While there was broad denunciation on set, it was Mika Brzezinski who went one step further, saying the moment once again suggested that the billionaire should be removed from office — even if it meant invoking the 25th amendment.

“This one of the many, many, many ways this president has shown us that he is not fit, possibly not even well and I don’t even understand the people in this administration taking matters into their own hands and trying to sort of stick it out,” said Brzezinski.

“At some point you are working for a president who is not fit to lead, who is going to do something crazy in five minutes, one hour, tonight or tomorrow, like what more do you need to hear from him to start thinking 25th amendment or something else.”

The 25th amendment to the constitution allows for the removal of the president from office if the vice president and a majority of the cabinet agree that he is unfit to continue serving. It has often been floated as a nuclear option by Never Trump Republicans and on the sets of left leaning cable news shows.

There is at least some active opposition to Trump operating even within his own White House, a faction that became broadly known to the public after one of them published an anonymous Op-Ed in the New York Times in September.

“The root of the problem is the president’s amorality. Anyone who works with him knows he is not moored to any discernible first principles that guide his decision making,” wrote the anonymous official. “I work for the president but like-minded colleagues and I have vowed to thwart parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations.”

Joe Scarborough Says Trump Is ‘Not Man Enough’ to Stand Up to Saudi Arabia: ‘He’s Kowtowing’

The set of “Morning Joe” didn’t take kindly to President Trump’s suggestion Monday that Washington Post columnist Jamal  Khashoggi might have been murdered by “rogue killers” — with both Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski in turn suggesting that Trump was weak.

“Just like he did in Helsinki. You have a guy who is scared of KGB agents, not man enough to stand up to former KGB agents and not man enough to stand up to Saudi sheikhs. That’s what we have in a president?” Scarborough asked.

“I thought he was going to be a strong leader. Instead he’s kowtowing and letting these people, letting these autocrats, letting these tyrants kill journalists in the light of day,” he continued.

Brzezinski was in complete agreement.

‘This is vintage Trump. Sowing doubt, propping up dictators and people who are cruel and people who are clearly on the side of wrong,” she said. “It hurts America and it certainly makes him look like a weak leader. So weak it’s painful.

“What ever they have on him better be worth it because he looks like a bumbling idiot,” she added. “Feckless.”

The “Morning Joe” segment comes amid growing questions surrounding the disappearance of Khashoggi, who vanished on Oct. 2. He was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Turkish officials have said they believe the writer was murdered by the kingdom and dismembered with a bone saw by a 15-man team sent in specifically for the job, the New York Times reported.

Saudi Arabia has categorically denied the allegations, but reports emerged Monday that the country was preparing a report to admit they had in fact killed Khashoggi by accident as part of a botched interrogation. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is currently in Riyadh to discuss the issue.

The Khashoggi situation has resulted in catastrophic fallout for Saudi Arabia, with organizations as varied as museums to the WWE facing pressure to disassociate. The nation’s Future Investment Initiative conference later this month has been racked by cancellations — particularly from media partners. So far, the New York Times, CNN, CNBC, the Financial Times and Bloomberg have all dropped out.

Fox Business remains committed to the event and last told TheWrap that their involvement was “under review.”

‘Morning Joe’ Mocks ‘Baby President’ Trump After ’60 Minutes’ Interview: ‘What a Baby’

The set of “Morning Joe” offered analysis of President Trump’s interview on “60 Minutes” Sunday evening, focusing on the president’s frequent assertion to Lesley Stahl that he was not a “baby.”

Opening the show Monday, Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski repeatedly called Trump a “baby,” and snickered as they introduced their guests for the 6 a.m hour.

“Baby President,” said Scarborough. “He’s a Baby. What a baby. What a baby. Well, more than one or two references about the emperor not having any clothes.”

“He wants to make it clear to you that he’s not a baby,” said Brzezinski. “Seems like a baby. Big Baby and really really ill-equipped and unfit to lead this country.”

Show regular and c0-host of Showtime’s “The Circus” John Heilemann also couldn’t resist getting in on the routine.

“Like a naked baby,” he said. “A clothes-free baby. That’s how babies are. They generally don’t have much in the way of clothing.”

President Trump spoke with Stahl for nearly 30 minutes Sunday evening in a wide ranging discussion that touched on Russia, China, North Korea, trade, climate change, Brett Kavanaugh and the disappearance of Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi. It was his first interview with Stahl and “60 Minutes” since they spoke two years ago shortly after his election.

While the president offers extensive commentary to Fox News and other favored outlets, he has been more reticent with other media — who generally pushback against his claims more. Trump routinely derides much of the press as “fake news.”

According to Stahl, Trump personally told that his tactic with the media was designed to lessen the impact of negative stories when they happen.

“He said, ‘You know why I do it? I do it to discredit you all and demean you all, so when you write negative stories about me no one will believe you,’” Stahl said in May. “He said that. So put that in your head for a minute.”

Joe Scarborough ‘Feels Bad’ for Trump Fans: ‘He’s Making Fools of Them’ (Video)

Joe Scarborough was not a fan of President Trump’s week of rallies, telling viewers of “Morning Joe” on Friday that he felt bad for Trump diehards and said the billionaire was making them look stupid.

“Who is stupid enough to believe that. I just gotta ask the question? Who is stupid enough to believe that,” Scarborough thundered after playing a clip of President Trump falsely accusing Hillary Clinton of colluding with Russia during the 2016 campaign.

“Who does Donald Trump believe in that audience is so stupid as to believe that? And why does he continue insulting people that spend a lot of time going to his rallies? He’s making fools of them and I feel really bad for them because he is such a snake oil salesman.”

Also on hand, co-host Mika Brzezinski, who offered her feelings on the matter as well.

“I’m really glad you said that because I do think he’s using them as pawns,” she said. “I feel terrible for what he’s doing to these people who are so excited to come to his rally to see the President of the United States and then he uses them like that and makes them look stupid.”

Admittedly, it was one of Trump’s bigger fibs when he told an audience in Pennsylvania Wednesday that Hillary Clinton has in fact colluded with Russia to undermine him during the 2016 campaign.

“There was collusion between Hillary, the Democrats and Russia,” he said. “There was collusion, there’s no question.”

The line was too much for Clinton, who offered her own burn on Twitter.

“Seriously, you asked Russia to hack me on national television,” she said.

Joe Scarborough Calls Trump Attack on George Soros ‘Anti-Semitic’ (Video)

Joe Scarborough accused President Trump of engaging in ant-semitism on Monday’s “Morning Joe,” saying his Friday tweet accusing George Soros of paying Brett Kavanaugh protesters was an old “trick.”

“That’s a very old, tired, anti-semitic — very old anti-semitic trick that people have claimed, usually on the internet,” he said.

Also on set was Mika Brzezinski, who read Trump’s tweet on air.

“The very rude elevator screamers are paid professionals only looking to make senators look bad. Don’t fall for it! Also, look at all of the professionally made identical signs,” she read, quoting the president. “Paid for by Soros and others. These are not signs made in the basement from love!”

In the hours before Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed by the Senate to serve on the Supreme Court on Saturday, Washington D.C. was overrun by protesters. While pro-Kavanaugh Americans were also present, the loudest voices were overwhelmingly represented by anti-Kavanaugh forces looking to pressure wavering senators like Jeff Flake and Susan Collins to vote against him.

Kavanaugh faced multiple accusations of sexual assault from incidents more than three decades ago. He has categorically denied all of the charges.

Soros has lent his considerable resources to liberal causes for decades and the hedge fund billionaire has been criticized by many Republicans who have accused him of all manner of nefarious activities. Over the years, commentators like Scarborough have blamed “anti-semitism” for the Soros fixation, though Republicans who attack him have strenuously denied it.

On-air Brzezinski called the charges that Soros’ money was funding protesters “false” but reporting from the conservative Daily Caller suggests that at least some amount of his money was being funneled to activists to pay for legal bills.

‘Morning Joe’ Says Sarah Huckabee Sanders Has ‘Been Made Rotten to the Core’ by Trump Presidency

The set of “Morning Joe” was unimpressed with Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ White House press briefing on Wednesday, with Mika Brzezinski offering a blistering denunciation of it and launching a personal attack on Sanders.

“I really don’t understand Sarah Huckabee Sanders. I don’t get it. Some would say that you’re basically a flack for a misogynist who is a proud predator who brags about grabbing women by the genitals,” said Brzezinski. “As a woman in a powerful position, I’m sorry, you’re a complete disappointment. A complete disappointment.”

“There is absolutely no excuse for defending a president for mocking a victim of sexual misconduct … a woman who is suffering,” she continued. “You can’t say that’s wrong? You have been made rotten to the core by this presidency.”

After giving only one press briefing during September, Sanders spoke to reporters Wednesday where she faced withering questions over a multitude of pent up issues and the latest Trump outrage — his decision to mock Christine Blasey Ford during a rally in Mississippi on Tuesday.

In her remarks, Sanders said Trump had not been mocking Ford but merely “stating the facts” about her testimony. She also fought with CNN’s Jim Acosta.

It’s not the first time Brzezinski has taken the gloves off with Sanders over her defense of Trump. In December 2017, she also attacked the press secretary after Trump sent a sexually suggestive tweet about New York Sen. Kirsten  Gillibrand.

“I want to know how she does that,” said Brzezinski, who also called Trump a “sexist pig.”

Joe Scarborough Slams ‘Mainstream Media’ Over Kavanaugh Coverage: ‘So One-Sided’

Joe Scarborough said he wouldn’t vote for Brett Kavanaugh if he were a senator, but that doesn’t mean he’s happy about how the judge is being treated in the wake of multiple sexual misconduct accusations against him.

On Wednesday, the “Morning Joe” host slammed the “mainstream media” and accused it of “one-sided” coverage, saying that fair questions about the accuracy of Christine Blasey Ford’s story should be part of the 24/7 news cycle. Scarborough described attending an event in which many participants wanted to know more answers than the media was providing.

“Quite a few people that we talked to — a lot of them were registered Democrats — raised questions about Dr. Ford’s story. That’s something in 24/7 news coverage, at least in mainstream media … they won’t talk about it.”

“If anybody sticks their neck out and says that they disbelieve any part of her story or they talk about how there are no corroborating witnesses, they’ll get absolutely slammed,” he continued. “The media coverage of this has been so one-sided, it has been so biased. There has been the presumption from the very beginning that every single allegation made against the judge was true.”

Once on a smooth path to the Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination was throw into turmoil after Ford came forward to accuse him of sexually assaulting her at a party in the early 1980s. She testified publicly about the alleged assault last Thursday. Two other women have also come forward with stories of how Kavanaugh engaged in sexual misconduct against them around the same period.

The judge has categorically denied all of the allegations, also publicly doing so to the Senate Judiciary Committee. In equal parts angry and weepy testimony, Kavanaugh said the allegations had “destroyed” his family and were part of an orchestrated plot against him by Senate Democrats as revenge for his work in the 1990s investigating Bill Clinton.

Joe Scarborough Mocks Michael Avenatti: ‘Sounded Like Lionel Hutz on ‘The Simpsons’

Joe Scarborough doesn’t think much of the idea of President Michael Avenatti, telling his audience on Monday that the attorney representing Stormy Daniels and Kavanaugh accuser Julie Swetnick acted more like a cartoon lawyer than a presidential candidate.

“He sounded like Lionel Hutz on ‘The Simpsons’ last night,” he said speaking of a lengthy interview Avenatti gave to MSNBC anchor Kasie Hunt. “He was advertising his law firm on your show more than it seemed he was running for president, but we shall see.”

Scarborough — a lawyer himself — then did his best impression of a fast talking, “if you’ve been injured,” Lionel Hutz-esque tort attorney.

Once one of the most beloved and regularly occurring member of the Simpsons universe, the character of Lionel Hutz was retired after the death of actor Phil Hartman, who voiced him for the show. He hasn’t been seen in an episode since Season 12.

Avenatti, a TV hungry attorney who has been likened to a Democratic Trump, has made no secret of his presidential ambitions, teasing the prospect very publicly and already making pilgrimages to key primary states.

“People are very enthusiastic about the potential of me running and if there’s a need I’m going to run because there’s too much at stake in 2020,” he told Don Lemon just weeks ago. “The Democrats cannot afford to take the approach they’ve taken in elections past and nominate someone who is not a fighter.”

As Stormy Daniels fades from headlines, Avenatti has persisted in the news, prominently taking on a client, Julie Swetnick, now accusing Judge Kavanaugh of participating in gang rapes during drunken parties in the early 1980s.

Kavanaugh has categorically denied all allegations against him and the Senate Judiciary Committee has so far dismissed the Avenatti claims. An FBI probe launched on Friday has no plan to investigate Swetnick — for now.

‘Morning Joe’ Hits GOP After Kavanaugh Hearings: ‘Republicans Treat Americans Stupid’

“Morning Joe” lashed out at Republican senators on Friday over their refusal to launch an FBI investigation into sexual misconduct allegations against Brett Kavanaugh, saying their decision was motivated by their fear of having Kavanaugh’s old friend Mark Judge speak to the organization.

“They don’t want the FBI to talk to Mark Judge. The whole world knows that and Republicans treat Americans stupid when they pretend it’s anything else other than that,” said show co-host Joe Scarborough on Friday. “It makes no sense that he and every Republican are afraid to have an FBI [investigation].”

Both Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski said they found Kavanaugh and his accuser Dr. Christine Blasey Ford to be highly persuasive witnesses.

Also Read: ‘Morning Joe’: Kavanaugh Proves GOP Is Party of ‘Ignorant White Men’

“Extremely compelling, extremely painful,” Brzezinski said of Ford’s testimony. “I cried. I head tears in my eyes during the opening statements.” Scarborough also said he cried during the more than nine hours of hearings.

On Thursday Kavanaugh issued a forceful, defiant and emotional denial of both Ford’s allegation that he tried to rape her in the early 1980s and other women who have come forward alleging sexual misconduct.

“Sexual assault is horrific. It is morally wrong. It is illegal. It is contrary to my religious faith. And it contradicts the core promise of this nation that all people are created equal and entitled to be treated with dignity and respect,” said Kavanaugh. “I never did anything remotely resembling what Dr. Ford describes.”

The various allegations swirling around Kavanaugh have thrown his nomination to the Supreme Court into turmoil. Republicans with a 51 seat majority can only lose two senators (assuming Democrats all vote no). Media outlets Thursday widely reported that Republicans including Jeff Flake, Bob Corker, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski have all been wavering on the nomination and it remains unclear how the final vote will go.

Kavanaugh is expected to have a Judiciary Committee vote on Friday and it’s an open question as to whether he will receive the recommendation of the panel to move forward.

The set of “Morning Joe” offered a dismal reaction to President Trump’s speech to the United Nation on Tuesday, telling their audience Wednesday that world leaders were laughing at Trump and warned that America had surrendered it’s place in the world.

The show opened with footage of world leaders offering spontaneous laugher to President Trump’s claim that his administration had accomplished “more than almost any administration in the history of our country.”

“I just want everyone to stop for a second and get reaction to the sound bite you just saw and the laughter you just heard,” said co-host Mika Brzezinski. “The world is laughing at the President of the United States and Donald Trump’s America has become the butt of a big joke.”

The president’s speech to the United Nations was deeply polarizing, with critics on MSNBC slamming the performance, while the president’s fans in MAGAland were broadly supportive.

The UN speech was a departure for the show, which has dedicated the lion’s share of coverage all week to sexual misconduct allegations against Brett Kavanaugh — which will come a a dramatic climax tomorrow when Christine Blasey Ford is expected to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

On set, Joe Scarborough went even further, denouncing liberal journalists who had seemingly already made up their minds before the facts could be known.

“Oh my God. We have been harshly critical of Fox News for being in the tank and being state television for Donald Trump,” said the former GOP Congressman. “What we’ve seen last week has made me want to call networks and put a ‘D’ in front of the name of the so-called journalists that have already decided hat Brett Kavanaugh is a rapist.”

“This three hour block of time is a smear-free zone. There will be no convicting of either person on either side on this show,” added c0-host Mika Brzezinski, who warned that any such smearing would result in an ejection from set.

“I’ve done it before,” she said.

What began with one allegation of past sexual assault two weeks ago from California professor Christine Blasey Ford, led to a second accusation from around the same time in the 1980s by another woman, Deborah Ramirez, on Sunday. Stormy Daniels attorney Michael Avenatti has also made the rounds on Twitter and MSNBC/CNN this week to tease more women who he said plan to come forward to offer corroborating evidence against Kavanaugh.

On Monday, Kavanaugh sat for an interview on Fox News with his wife to again offer a categorical denial of all allegations leveled against him.

“I’ve never sexually assaulted anyone. I did not have sexual intercourse or anything close to sexual intercourse in high school or for many years there after,” he told Martha MacCallum adding that he was never at the party Ford says she was assaulted at and had never been black out drunk during his school days.

‘Morning Joe’: Kavanaugh Proves GOP Is Party of ‘Ignorant White Men’

The set of “Morning Joe” denounced Brett Kavanaugh on Friday, with longtime show regular Donny Deutsch saying the nomination was evidence that the Republican party was ruled by dumb white men.

“You’re seeing on display a metaphor for what this party is, basically just ignorant white men,” said Deutsch, who believes the only reasonable thing for Republicans to do would be to withdraw Kavanaugh’s nomination.

“What would they seem like if all of a sudden they stepped forward, any leaders there, and said, ‘You know what? This is, at the very least, a stain we can’t deal with,’ and just say ‘This is not the right thing and we need to move on,’” he added. “Wouldn’t that send a signal to women?”

The Deutsch position was a departure from some previously skeptical coverage of Kavanaugh’s accuser Christine Blasey Ford, which percolated on set earlier this week. On Wednesday, show co-host Mika Brzezinski said Ford’s reluctance to testify under oath would not be acceptable and would result in Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

“If she doesn’t want to speak, if she doesn’t want to testify, you have to wonder what the Republicans are supposed to do except demand a vote,” said Brzezinski. “This is something that happened in high school. This is going to need her voice. There’s no other way around it. No one can do it for her. As miserable as that may be.”

Ford, through her attorney, has now indicated that she is open to testifying next week under a series of conditions laid out to the Senate Judiciary committee. The California college professor has accused Judge Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her while drunk at a party in the early 1980s. Kavanaugh has categorically denied the charge, but the accusation spooked the committee enough to postpone on a vote on the judge which has been scheduled for this week.

Joe Scarborough Slams Democrats for ‘Outing’ Kavanaugh Accuser: ‘So Offensive’ (Video)

Joe Scarborough put on his former GOP Congressman hat on Thursday, blasting Democratic senators on the Judiciary Committee for “outing” Brett Kavanaugh accuser Christine Blasey Ford against her wishes at the 11th hour.

“What is so offensive about the way the Democrats outed Dr. Ford this time is they waited until their hearings were over,” he said on “Morning Joe.”

“They waited until they basically put their finger up in the political winds and they knew that Kavanaugh was going to pass, and then somebody on the Senate Judiciary Committee, or perhaps out of a democratic congresswoman’s office, said ‘well, it looks like he’s going to pass, we’re going to shove this lady out of the closet and basically identify her,’” he said.

Scarborough believes it was the second time in living memory that Democratic senators on the committee had botched an accusation against a nominee — alluding to the 1991 allegations against Clarence Thomas by Anita Hill.

Though Ford finally went public on Sunday with her allegation that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her while drunk at a party in the early 1980s, she told her senator, Democrat Diane Feinstein, in a letter months ago. Though Ford requested Feinstein keep the allegation quiet, it’s unclear what, if anything, the Senator did to alert relevant parties before Kavanaugh was nominated.

Kavanaugh has categorically denied any wrongdoing.

Still, the allegations spooked the Senate Judiciary committee enough to delay a planned vote on Kavanaugh on Thursday. Both Kavanaugh and Ford have been invited to offer additional testimony under oath next week, though Ford’s attorney has said that her client would prefer to speak after a full FBI investigation of her accusations — something GOP senators are so far resisting.

‘Morning Joe’ Says Kavanaugh Accuser Must Testify: ‘There Is No Other Way Around It’

The set of “Morning Joe” was largely unsympathetic to news that Brett Kavanaugh accuser Christine Blasey Ford was looking to delay offering sworn testimony until an FBI investigation could review her accusations.

On set, co-host Mika Brzezinski — a frequent champion of MeToo causes — said Republicans would have no choice but to call for a vote if Ford did not speak on Monday.

“This is what “Me too” is all about,” she added. “Nobody wants to be on the wrong side of this. So everyone said let her speak, let her testify. Give her a moment to have her voice. Let’s hear her story.”

Kavanaugh had been on track for a smooth — if partisan — nomination to the Supreme Court until Ford went public with a detailed sexual assault allegation him in the Washington Post on Sunday. In her accusation, Ford said Kavanaugh assaulted her while drunk at a high school party in the early 1980s.

Kavanaugh has categorically denied the allegation, but the Republican-controlled Senate judiciary committee was spooked enough to delay a planned vote on his nomination this week in order to allow both Kavanaugh and Ford to offer additional testimony on Monday. That plan was thrown into turmoil after Ford’s lawyer said this week that her client wanted to avoid a hearing until an FBI investigation into her claims could be completed.

So far the White House has remained steadfastly behind Kavanaugh, with the president telling reporters yesterday that “this is not a man who deserves this” and reminding his followers on Twitter yesterday about how important to the Supreme Court was to his election.

The Supreme Court is one of the main reasons I got elected President. I hope Republican Voters, and others, are watching, and studying, the Democrats Playbook.

BuzzFeed Chief to ‘Morning Joe’: ‘In a Normal Country Nobody Watches This Show’ (Video)

BuzzFeed editor-in-chief Ben Smith offered a subtle jab at “Morning Joe” on Friday, telling the show’s hosts and guests that nobody would watch them if we lived in “normal” times.

“In a normal country, nobody watches this show,” he said. “Sorry folks.”

Smith was on set to plug his latest piece, where he attacked “insider political journalism” that he said he was partially responsible for creating during his time at Politico. His remarks about “Morning Joe” came specifically when Associated Press White House reporter Jonathan Lemire drew attention to a conversation Smith said he had with a Brazilian editor about politics.

“A Brazilian editor once told me that you could tell his country was in political crisis because everyone was talking about politics all the time. In a normal country, nobody cares about politics,” he wrote in the piece.

“And I think that most of all, the political journalism of that crisis is no longer a special genre of journalism, but instead the core of the profession: getting to the truth, explaining the world, and often telling stories with a clear right and wrong.”

Smith — who responsible for breaking the John Edwards $400 haircut story — said that insider journalism epitomized by sports metaphors had become an anachronism in this “new era.”

“The game changer, the horse race, the Hail Mary — apt, perhaps, for the party politics of the 1990s and 2000s — are painfully inadequate for the movement politics of a new era, with higher stakes, higher passions, and far wider interest,” he wrote.

Smith has served as BuzzFeed’s top editor since December 2011.
