‘Broad City’ Star Ilana Glazer Event Canceled After ‘Kill All Jews’ Vandalism at Brooklyn Synagogue

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

A political event hosted by “Broad City” star Ilana Glazer at a Brooklyn synagogue in New York was canceled Thursday night after someone vandalized the temple with anti-Semitic slurs, TheWrap has confirmed.

A custodian at Union Temple in Brooklyn Heights told the New York Post that several examples of hateful graffiti were found, including “Kill all Jews” written on one door.

Glazer was set to interview New York state senate candidates Andrew Gounardes and Jim Gaughran alongside journalist Amy Goodman. The event was set for 8:30 p.m., but was canceled about a half hour before it began, according to a rep for Union Temple.

A rep for Glazer did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment. “I can’t put these 200 people who came to listen in a safe space … in that danger,” Glazer said Friday morning, according to Democracy Now on Twitter, an account associated with Goodman.

— Democracy Now! (@democracynow) November 2, 2018

That echoes what attendee Kathryn Gonzalez said on Facebook Thursday night: “[Glazer] didn’t feel comfortable ushering 200 people into the enclosed space.”

“I hope it doesn’t have a chilling effect on people going to vote,” Gounardes told the NY Post. “We can’t afford to stand in the silence or be scared or intimated.” He added: “This is not the New York City that any of us want to be living in.”

The slurs are being investigated as a hate crime by New York City police.

The event’s shutdown comes less than a week after 11 people were murdered, along with several others that were injured, during a shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. The Anti-Defamation League called it the “deadliest attack” on American Jews in the nation’s history.

It also comes at a time of rising anti-Semitic attacks in New York City.

“Contrary to what are surely the prevailing assumptions, anti-Semitic incidents have constituted half of all hate crimes in New York this year, according to the Police Department,” The New York Times noted on Wednesday. “To put that figure in context, there have been four times as many crimes motivated by bias against Jews — 142 in all — as there have against blacks. Hate crimes against Jews have outnumbered hate crimes targeted at transgender people by a factor of 20.”

Everything Apple Unveiled Today, Including Long-Awaited New Mac Mini and Macbook Air

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

Apple unveiled its latest slate of new products on Monday in Brooklyn — just in time for millions of loyal customers to shell out their money before the holidays — including the newest iPad and a long-awaited Mac Mini update. Oh yeah, Lana Del Rey also made an appearance, because why not?

The new Mac Mini strikes a familiar look on the outside, but its support for up to 64 GB of RAM and quad-core and six-core Intel processors instantly separate it from the most recent update, launched in 2014.

The Mac Mini will have up to 2 TB of storage and sport Apple’s new T2 security chip. It has four Thunderbolt 3 ports, and an HDMI and USB-A port. The 8 GB base model starts at $799 and will start shipping November 7 — but if you get it completely tricked out, you’re looking at upwards of $4,000.

The MacBook Air also received an update, with a 13.3 inch Retina display, touch ID and Siri now built in. It comes with an eighth-generation Intel dual-core processor and up to 16 GB of RAM and 1.5 TB of storage. The 2018 Air is a little bit more air-like, too, shedding about a quarter of a pound to hit 2.75 pounds. It still has a headphone jack and two USB port on the sides. The MacBook Air is made with 100 percent recycled aluminum, just like the new Mac Mini. It’ll run $1,199 for its 8 GB base edition and will also ship November 7.

The latest iPad and its stylus on display at Apple’s product launch event in Brooklyn

The third major product release was the new iPad Pro, which, like the latest iPhones, has kicked the home button to the curb. The new iPad runs on Apple’s A12X bionic chip and comes with up to 1 TB of storage. It comes with a wider 11 inch screen, but by slimming down the bezel, fits the same body size as the old 10.5 inch iPad. A bigger 12.9 inch version will also be available.

Apple boasted the latest iPad is 92 percent faster than all portable computers sold in the last year. The 7 megapixel camera on the front will use FaceID to unlock, and the back has a 12 megapixel camera. The 11 inch base model will run $799, and the 12.9 inch will cost $999. It will also start shipping November 7.

A few other things worth mentioning: Tim Cook kicked things off by saying there are now 100 million active Mac devices around the world. And if you stayed until the end, you caught a performance by Lana Del Rey. With $240 billion in cash, Apple can afford to splurge a bit.

Julianna Margulies Details ‘Horrific’ Encounter With Steven Seagal in Hotel Room: ‘I Saw His Gun’

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

“The Good Wife” star Julianna Margulies said she was asked to meet actor and producer Steven Seagal in a hotel room at “10 o’clock at night” when she was 23, at which point he made sure she “saw his gun.”

“When I was 23, a casting director, a woman, said, ‘Steven Seagal wants to go over the scene with you in his hotel room at 10 o’clock at night,’” Margulies told Jenny Hutt for SiriusXM’s “Just Jenny” on Friday.

“I lived in Brooklyn, and I said, ‘Oh, I don’t do that. I don’t travel. I don’t have money for a cab.’ And I didn’t. And I said, ‘And I don’t take subways late at night.’ And she says, ‘Don’t worry, we’ll reimburse you. And I’m here, a woman,’” Margulies added.

“I got to the hotel at 10:40, and she wasn’t there. And he was. Alone. And he made sure that I saw his gun, which I had never seen a gun in real life,” she said. “And I got out of there unscathed; it’s a long story. “

A spokesperson for Seagal did not respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

According to People, Seagal has previously been accused of sexual misconduct by “Inside Edition” correspondent Lisa Guerrero, who said she was asked to meet with him at his home in 1996 for a private audition, where she was met by him in a silk bathrobe.

Jenny McCarthy said that in 1998, he asked her to audition naked for “Under Siege 2.” A spokesperson for Seagal denied McCarthy’s claims to The Daily Beast.

Margulies also said she refused to meet indie mogul Harvey Weinstein, who has been accused of sexual misconduct including harassment and rape by more than 90 women, alone after her encounter with Seagal.

“I have my own Harvey story, but I never was raped. And I never was harmed. And I don’t know how I got out of that hotel room,” the actress said. “It always starts with, ‘I’m a healer, I want to massage you’ and all. I sorta screamed my way out… But, the point is that for years, years, we all just shrugged it off.”

She added, “And because of my experience with Steven Seagal in that room, which was horrific, I refused to meet Harvey Weinstein in his hotel room when another woman brought me, saying, ‘You will absolutely get [a screen test].’”

Also Read: NYPD Says It Has an ‘Actual Case’ Against Harvey Weinstein for Rape

She explained that she said she wouldn’t go meet Weinstein at the Peninsula hotel alone because of her experience with Seagal. So a female assistant accompanied her up to the room, and knocked on the door.

“He opened the door, in a bathrobe. I could see that there were candles lit in the room, and there was a dinner for two. And I saw him stare at her, daggers … And he looked at me, furious … And he slammed the door. And, of course, I didn’t get the part.”

Weinstein is now under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department for a lewd conduct accusation. And on Friday, New York Police Chief Robert K. Boyce said the NYPD had “an actual case” against Weinstein involving rape.

A spokesperson for Weinstein has not yet responded to TheWrap’s request for comment but has previously denied “any allegations of non-consensual sex.”

Jimmy Kimmel Introduces World to ‘Williamsburg or Gettysburg?’ Beard-Guessing Game (Video)

Modern-day Williamsburg, Brooklyn has some of the thickest beards in American history. Just don’t tell that to Civil War-era Gettysburg.

On Thursday, Jimmy Kimmel introduced the world to his “Williamsburg or Gettysburg?” beard-guessing game. It was an instant hit, and harder then you might think.

At least the rules were simple: Kimmel showed a close-up photo of a beard and his audience had to guess whether it was from the ABC show’s week in the New York City borough or from like 150 years ago on a Pennsylvania battlefield.

David Letterman is a gift-giver, which really works with his new Santa look. The former “Late Show” host joined “Jimmy Kimmel Live” in Brooklyn on Tuesday, where the bushily bearded legend was just happy “to be out of the house,” he said.

But Letterman had a bone to pick with another of their late-night brethren: Conan O’Brien. You see, Dave sent the TBS personality a horse — yes, a real, live one — and Conan’s having a tough time with the upkeep. That was also the topic of conversation when O’Brien visited Stephen Colbert’s show — Letterman’s old stomping grounds — on Friday, which readers can catch up on at the bottom of this post.

Turns out, this is one divisive equine.

WWE Superstar John Cena has sparked endless tears of joy among his millions of fans, but in a video released Monday, he’s the one that gets teared up.

The “SmackDown” star thought he was filming a segment for Cricket Wireless reading thank-you notes from fans, but they had a big surprise for him.

As newly-engaged Cena read heartfelt letters from followers telling him how much he’s impacted their lives — from giving them strength to battle illness or helping them get over the loss of a loved one — the tears also began tumbling down his cheeks.

While wearing a “Never Give Up” cap, Cena repeatedly read out the words he lives by in the numerous letters.

The last thank you note featured was in the form of a video by a child name Tyler Schweer, whose mother had breast cancer. Tyler mentioned how John gave him his wristband at a WWE event with the famous phrase. Tyler also said he gave this wristband to his Mom to help and told her to never give up.

Needless to say, our muscled mountain bawled as Tyler broke through the paper wall to see him.

Lin-Manuel Miranda Makes Surprise Appearance at WWE SummerSlam

The Great White Way met the squared circle on Sunday night when “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda made a surprise appearance at WWE SummerSlam.

The acclaimed composer/playwright/actor and overall badass was spotted ringside at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, New York, for the WWE flagship event.

Having won a Pulitzer, three Tony Awards, two Grammys, an Emmy and been nominated for an Oscar, Miranda easily slipped into the role of “excited WWE fan,” as he cheered and jeered along with the sell-out crowd.

One of the biggest moments of the night featured Braun Strowman power-slamming “The Beast Incarnate” Brock Lesnar through two announce tables wasn’t enough to satisfy Sunday’s “SummerSlam” main event — the aptly monikered “Monster Among Men” dumped the third ringside desk onto the WWE Universal Champion’s already bruised body.

The “Hamilton” creator — who recently launched his hit musical in Los Angeles — also got to witness action from Roman Reigns, Samoa Joe, A.J. Styles, Kevin Owens, Natalya, Naomi, Sasha Banks, Deam Ambrose and Seth Rollins.

WWE continues to take over Brooklyn tonight with “Monday Night Raw” and Tuesday with “SmackDown.”

WWE SummerSlam took over the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, this weekend  — and, as expected, the result was epic.

With an A-list lineup of stars such Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns, Samoa Joe, A.J. Styles and Kevin Owens, the Big Apple certainly delivered the goods.

The packed card in front of a sold-out crowd provided endless entertainment, from a historic tag team tournament to a brave WWE superstar daring to take on the mountain man Brock Lesnar (with a little help from the set).

While millions of viewers forked out for the pay-per-view, TheWrap had a seat inside Barclays Center in Brooklyn. For those of you who didn’t buy the biggest entertainment event of the summer, here’s what you missed.

Women Rule
Proving that the women’s revolution is going strong, the thousands of male fans in the stadium cheered for the female matches as loudly as the men’s, especially when it came to Natalya going head-to-head with neon-clad rival Naomi. “Tap, tap, tap” came the chant, as Nattie blew away her opponent to become the SmackDown Women’s Champion.

Shark Tank
“How ya doin’?” became the chant of the night when the shark cage was set up in the ring and Enzo Amore bragged, “Right now, I’m the Al Capone of this microphone.” Those were big words when it came to floating over Big Cass and Big Show — or “Big Slow” as the crowd dubbed him — in a giant cage. Clearly size doesn’t matter, as the chant soon turned to “oh, this match is boring!”

Commercial Non-Breaks
Usually commercials are an unwanted and unnecessary inconvenience, but when it comes to John Cena strutting his stuff and pitching the Tap Out brand while walking on burning coals, it’s must-see-TV.

Channeling “Game of Thrones”
Randy Orton bent the knee on Sunday just as Daenerys kept demanding her rivals to do the same on “Game of Thrones,” but he did it in victory after a swift defeat of Belgian powerlifter Rusev.

Pink or Punk?
The Sasha Banks v. Alexa Bliss match divided the audience as they split into chants of “Sasha sucks” and “Alexa sucks,” while the pink-hued Divas proved there was nothing catty about this fight. Sasha eventually made a solid Banks Statement and Alexa was forced to tap out.

Beauty vs. Brawn
It was tattoos vs. war paint when Bray Wyatt took on Finn Balor, and as the clean-cut Demon got dragged across the ring by the dreadlocked Wyatt, the crowd was clearly on Balor’s side. Even an impressive crab crawl sadly couldn’t save Bray, and he became another victim of the body-painted fan favorite.

Final Four
It was a tag team extravaganza when Seth “Freakin’” Rollins and Dean Ambrose went against Cesaro (complete with a James Bond worthy-entrance) and Sheamus. The popular quadruple sparked the first standing ovation of the night in anticipation of the power play match up. Despite looking he was in dire need of a spray tan, Sheamus got the golden-skinned Rollins on the ropes early on before bouncing out of the ring like an agile leprechaun. His swift escape didn’t sit well with everyone, however, and sparked a yell of “stop frickin’ running.” The audience on the front row literally got the action in their lap when Cesaro went off script and leapt over the barricade to take out a beach ball. Ultimately, however, it was Rollins and Ambrose that manned up and set the stadium on fire with a resounding victory.

Referee McMahon
Sometimes it’s the referee that’s the real star of the show. And such was the case when Shane McMahon wore the zebra stripes to officiate the A.J. Styles v. Kevin Owens bout. Bursting out of his pinstriped shirt, McMahon eventually handed the belt to Styles.

Roman Doesn’t Reign
While HBO fans were engaged in finding out who would rule the Iron Throne, Roman Reigns discovered that he hadn’t won over the WWE fellowship when he joined Samoa Joe, Braun Stowman, and the mighty Lesnar. Boos and chants of “F— you, Roman,” echoed around the stadium … until a security guard reminded the rowdy crowd that “there’s little kids here.” Yeah, that didn’t work very well, but at least “Roman sucks” had less F-bombs.

And yep — when Lesnar and Stowman took it outside the ring, the crowd really did go wild, demanding “one more table.”
