Donald Trump Calls Jussie Smollett Attack ‘Horrible’ (Video)

President Donald Trump condemned the attack of “Empire” star Jussie Smollett, calling it “horrible” on Thursday.

“That I can tell you is horrible. It doesn’t get worse,” the president told White House reporter April Ryan when asked about the incident.

Smollett was attacked at around 2 a.m. Tuesday in Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood when he said that two people began yelling racial and homophobic slurs at him. Smollett told police that the attackers yelled “MAGA.”

In a statement on Tuesday, Chicago Police Department said a “cast member from the Fox series ‘Empire’ was injured in what police called a ‘possible racially-charged assault and battery.’”

On Wednesday evening, detectives released photos from a surveillance video showing “potential persons of interest” in the attack.

The photos show two silhouettes walking in the area of where Smollett was sometime between 1:30 a.m. and 1:45 a.m., but does not show the actual attack. Chicago police said they would like to question the two people.

Smollett has yet to comment publicly on the attack.

‘Nasty’ White House Correspondent April Ryan Says Trump Has a Problem With Women of Color (Video)

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

White House correspondent April Ryan said Monday that President Trump has a problem with women of color in the newsroom.

“Do you think he has a problem with women of color,” asked “The Real” co-host Loni Love.

“Yes,” said Ryan, cutting her off before she could even finish her question.

“The president is an equal opportunity offender, but when it comes to women of color, it gets very personal,” she said. Ryan then cited a list of black women Trump has insulted, including CNN’s Abby Philips, PBS’s Yamiche Alcindor, the Atlantic’s Jemele Hill and Congresswoman Maxine Waters.

During remarks on the White House lawn last week, president Trump called Ryan, a CNN contributor and White House correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks, “nasty,” a “loser,” and added that she “doesn’t know what the hell she is doing.”

“I wasn’t even there and the president had me on his mind,” she said reflecting on the exchange. “I am a winner, we are all winners,” added Ryan. Trump also insulted Phillips and Alcindor in the same press conference.

It’s not the first time Trump tangled with Ryan. During a presser in the White House briefing room last February, he suggested Ryan could set up a meeting between him and members of the Congressional Black Caucus.

The president’s insults to women of color last week were however the b-story to his ongoing struggle against CNN, who he again denigrated as an “enemy of the people.” On Wednesday, Trump had a brutal exchange with White House correspondent Jim Acosta, which ultimately led to the revocation of his press credentials.

“CNN should be ashamed of itself having you working for them. You are a rude, terrible person. You shouldn’t be working for CNN,” the president said to Acosta. “The way you treat Sarah Huckabee is horrible. The way you treat other people is horrible. You shouldn’t treat people that way.”

CNN is now considering legal action to force the White House to restore Acosta’s credentials.

CNN contributor April Ryan was not impressed with Melania Trump’s “Be Best” campaign, saying that the first lady was not “culturally American.”

“This is a first lady who is not culturally American, but she is learning the ways,” Ryan told “OutFront” host Erin Burnett on Monday evening of the campaign.

The “Be Best” campaign, which was launched at the White House on Monday, will focus on children, specifically curbing opioid abuse and cyberbullying.

“This is not just an American issue. These are not just American issues. These are international issues. Cyberbullying is an international issue. Social media is international and also the opioid addiction issue, so it’s not just here, but it’s abroad as well” said Ryan, who went on to argue — as many others have — that Trump might not be the best representative of the campaign given her husband’s well-known history of cyberbullying.

“She’s well aware of his cyberbullying,” Ryan added. “He’s considered by some, well many I would say in different sectors, one of the biggest bullies.”

The clip was first flagged by the Washington Free Beacon.

In a statement from the Rose Garden on Monday afternoon, the first lady explained the initiative.

“As a mother and as first lady, it concerns me that in today’s fast-paced and ever-connected world, children can be less prepared to express or manage their emotions and oftentimes turn to forms of destructive or addictive behavior such as bullying, drug addiction or even suicide,” she said.

“I feel strongly that as adults we can and should be best at educating our children about the importance of a healthy and balanced life.”

Melania Trump was born in Slovenia and became an American citizen in 2006. It’s unclear what Ryan meant by the comment. CNN did not immediately respond to a request for clarification from TheWrap.

After the backlash over President Trump’s reported quote about “shithole countries,” American Urban Radio Networks reporter and CNN contributor April Ryan pointedly asked him on Friday: “Are you a racist?”

Trump didn’t answer the question or a follow-up — “Mr. President, will you respond to these serious questions about your statement, sir?”– and left the room.

The question came at a White House event honoring the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Ryan has clashed with the Trump administration before — in May, then-White House press secretary Sean Spicer scolded her, “please stop shaking your head,” as he answered one of her questions.

When Ryan asked her in February if he planned to meet with the Congressional Black Caucus, he replied: “I’ll tell you what, do you want to set up the meeting?” he said. “Do you want to set up the meeting? Are they friends of yours?” He was widely criticized by people who said his question presumed a monolithic relationship between all African-Americans.

Media Mocks Sean Spicer’s Return to White House Press Briefing Room

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer delivered a press briefing on Tuesday for the first time in more than two weeks, and it appears he was missed for all the wrong reasons — at least according to Twitter reactions from reporters.

Since Spicer’s last briefing, there has been widespread speculation that his role would be reduced and he even missed out on a chance to meet the Pope during President Trump’s foreign trip. Politico even reported last week that Spicer would no longer be expected to do a daily, on-camera briefing after the president’s foreign trip — but he did conduct one on the first business day since Trump returned home.

American Urban Radio Networks White House Correspondent April Ryan, who Spicer has sparred with in the past, started out the social media fun by suggesting that the press secretary colored his hair.

The briefing is underway and noticed as Sean speaks last weeks the foreign trip, he has colored his hair. Or at least it looks like it!

Spicer didn’t provide much information during the Q&A portion of the briefing, dodging questions about the ongoing investigation into Russian interference with the presidential election and the president’s thoughts on anonymous sources. Spicer’s name quickly started trending on Twitter when the briefing began and the majority of comments aren’t exactly complimentary.

April Ryan
White House correspondent April Ryan has found herself the target of the Donald Trump administration several times, but most recently when Press Secretary Sean Spicer told her to “stop shaking your head” at the daily press briefing last week. Back in February, Ryan was in the news after an exchange with Trump, when she asked if the president would meet with the Congressional Black Caucus and was asked by the president to set up a meeting.

ProPublica President Richard Tofel
Spicer dismissed the non-profit investigative news outlet ProPublica as a “left-wing blog” after the site reported that changes to a Trump trust document allow the president to pull money from his businesses at any time. “I don’t think it’s good for America when the president’s press secretary says something from the podium that is simply not true,” Tofel told The Washington Post.

Rachel Maddow
Donald Trump’s tax returns have become the great white whale of investigative reporters across the country, so when Maddow promised last month that she had obtained some documents, Twitter lost its collective mind. When she later clarified that all she had was a two-page form from 2005 and then spent twenty minutes dragging out the reveal on her show, some were quick to turn and accuse the MSNBC anchor of trying to goose her ratings.

“Red Eye” Tom Shillue and Andy Levy
Fox News announced on Monday that it had canceled its overnight news-comedy program “Red Eye” after 10 years on the air. The final “Red Eye” episode will air Friday night at 3 a.m., leaving host Tom Shillue and co-host Andy Levy without a show. Both are expected to stay with the network, but no announcement has been made yet.

Tomi Lahren
The controversial host of her own show on Glenn Beck’s conservative digital news outlet TheBlaze, Tomi Lahren was effectively fired after revealing on “The View” that she’s pro-choice. After her suspension was announced, Lahren was mocked by TheBlaze’s official Twitter account, which wrote “Pro-lifers aren’t the ones being hypocrites, Tomi.”

WHCA President Jeff Mason
The annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner is an annual gathering to honor the reporters who cover the president and his administration, but this year’s event has faced numerous setbacks. Organizations such as Time, People, Vanity Fair and the New Yorker have pulled out of their events surrounding the dinner, and no host for the main banquet has yet been announced. To make matters worse, Trump and his White House staff have pledged to skip the event this year.

Bill O’Reilly
The New York Times published a bombshell report on Saturday revealing that Fox News and Bill O’Reilly have paid out $13 million to settle five sexual harassment lawsuits. The network appears to be standing behind O’Reilly for the time being, reportedly extending the host’s contract the same day the report was published, but his show has already lost several of its advertisers.

CNN Hires April Ryan as Political Analyst After Sean Spicer Confrontation

CNN has hired American Urban Radio Networks reporter April Ryan as a political analyst, TheWrap has confirmed.

Ryan recently made headlines after White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told her to “stop shaking your head” at a recent press briefing, after Ryan asked how the Trump administration might try to “revamp its image.” Many people, including Hillary Clinton came to Ryan’s defense, and Spicer went out of his way to be polite to Ryan at the next briefing.

Back in February, Ryan was in the news after an exchange with Trump, when she asked if the president would meet with the CBC — first having to explain that CBC stood for Congressional Black Caucus.

Trump was criticized for his handling of the exchange. It was especially glaring as earlier in his press conference, Trump declared himself the “least racist person.”

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer went out of his way to be pleasant to American Urban Radio Networks reporter April Ryan during Wednesday’s briefing, less than 24 hours after scolding her to “stop shaking your head.”

Spicer called on Ryan first when it was time to answer questions from reporters, smiling as he simply said, “April.”

She responded, “Well, thank you Sean” and the press secretary asked, “How are you today?”

“I’m fine and how are you,” Ryan responded to which Spicer answered, “fantastic,” as the room erupted in laughter.

It was a different story on Tuesday when Ryan asked Spicer how the Trump administration might try to “revamp its image” because of what she cited as a series of failures, pointing to Russian ties and wiretapping claims as examples.

“I get it, but I’ve said it from the day that I got here until whatever, that there is no connection. You’ve got Russia. If the president puts Russian salad dressing on his salad tonight, somehow that’s a Russian connection,” Spicer said.

Ryan tried to interject, but Spicer didn’t let up.

“I appreciate your agenda here, but the reality is — hold on,” he said. “At some point, report the facts.”

He continued: “I’m sorry that disgusts you. You’re shaking your head.”

Spicer went on to criticize Ryan’s follow-up question about Condoleezza Rice’s recent meeting with Trump, and the veteran reporter apparently shook her head once again.

“I’m sorry, please stop shaking your head again,” Spicer said

“I’ve been here for 20 years, since 1997, the second term of Bill Clinton,” Ryan told MSNBC’s Katy Tur after the bizarre confrontation. “We’ve never seen anything like this before. And my question was simple. How do you change the perception problem, basically? I don’t know verbatim what I said, but that was the impetus and the crux of my question. And it went off into this Russian dressing, no shaking my head or whatever.”

Hillary Clinton defended Ryan at a speaking event in San Francisco on Tuesday night.

Hillary Clinton took a moment at the Professional Business Women of California conference in San Francisco to defend both a White House reporter and Democratic lawmaker, who made headlines on Tuesday after being criticized by men. “Any woman who thinks this couldn’t be directed at her is living in a dream world,” Clinton said on Tuesday.

On Tuesday morning, Fox News host Bill O’Reilly got himself in hot water after he said that he “didn’t hear a word” of Democratic House rep. Maxine Waters’ speech against Donald Trump and the president’s staunchest supporters because of her “James Brown wig.”

O’Reilly was accused of racism on Twitter — Clinton agreed.

“One of your own California Congresswomen, Maxine Waters, was taunted with a racist joke about her hair,” Clinton said. “Too many women, especially women of color, have had a lifetime of practice taking precisely these kinds of indignities in stride.”

“Just look at all that’s happened in the last few days to women who were simply doing their jobs,” Clinton said. “April Ryan, an immensely respected journalist with unrivaled integrity, was doing her job just this afternoon, and she was patronized and cut off as she tried to ask a question.”
