LA Movie Production Rises for 3rd Straight Quarter Thanks to ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’

FilmLA announced on Tuesday that the Los Angeles area experienced a third consecutive quarter of increased film production, rising 11 percent from the same period in 2017.

As with the second quarter, which also saw feature film production rise by 11 percent from the year before, projects either set in L.A. or those that benefited from a tax incentive program fueled the growth. Films receiving the incentive contributed to just over 15 percent of all the shoot days logged in Los Angeles this quarter.

Among those features that were incentivized included Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Susanne Bier’s “Bird Box” and the Jean Seberg biopic with Kristen Stewart “Against All Enemies.”

“We are grateful for the continued positive impact of the California Film Tax Credit program as it continues to boost employment and production in Greater Los Angeles,” said FilmL.A. President Paul Audley in a statement. “Increases in feature film, commercials, TV Pilot and TV Drama production are very good news for the region’s economy.”

Television production also saw an uptick, contributing to a 3 percent increase of production across film, television and commercials overall. TV saw an increase of just 1.8 percent shooting days in Q3.

That’s in part because the production of TV dramas, including Netflix’s newly acquired “Lucifer” and “American Princess” on Lifetime, accounted for a whopping 21.6 percent jump among TV dramas for the quarter.

Kristen Stewart to Play ‘Breathless’ Star and French New Wave Icon Jean Seberg in ‘Against All Enemies’

“Una” director Benedict Andrews is directing the true story, which is also set to star Anthony Mackie and Jack O’Connell.

Kristen Stewart has been cast as legendary actress Jean Seberg in the upcoming thriller “Against All Odds. The movie is being directed by “Una” breakout Benedict Andrews and is set to co-star Jack O’Connell, Anthony Mackie, Margaret Qualley, and Colm Meaney. “Edge of Tomorrow 2” scribes Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse wrote the screenplay.

Against All Enemies” is inspired by the true story of Seberg, who was targeted by the illegal FBI surveillance program COINTELPRO in the late 1960s for supporting the Black Panther Party. Seberg is famous for playing the female lead in Jean-Luc Godard’s French New Wave classic “Breathless.” The actress also starred in “Bonjour Tristesse,” “Saint Joan,” and “Airport.”

The casting is the latest high profile gig for Stewart. The actress appeared opposite Chloë Sevigny in the Sundance premiere “Lizzie,” which will open in theaters this summer courtesy of Saban Films and Roadside Attractions, and will star in “Underwater” and “JT Leroy.” The latter also features Laura Dern and is directed by Justin Kelly.

“Against All Odds” is coming together quickly and will be shopped around to potential distributors. Producers include Fred Berger, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Andrew Levitas, Kate Garwood, and Stephen Hopkins.
