The Closing Night gala of the 62nd BFI London Film Festival (October 10 – October 21) is Jon S. Baird’s Old Hollywood biopic “Stan & Ollie,” starring Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly. The word oremiere will take place on October 21 at the Cineworld, Leicester Square, along with simultaneous preview screenings at cinemas across the UK.
The true story follows Hollywood comedy team Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy’s hectic farewell tour around the UK and Ireland with their wives Lucille (Shirley Henderson) and Ida (Nina Arianda). Reilly also stars in the Jacques Audiard western “The Sisters Brothers” this fall season.
“This beautiful tribute to cinema’s early comedy odd couple, Laurel & Hardy,” stated BFI London Film Festival Artistic Director Tricia Tuttle, “a truly funny and touching story about a tender life-long friendship…is also exploring the twilight years of two mega-watt performers who had a meteoric rise to fame. These two prove that true comic timing is eternal.”
Entertainment One will open “Stan & Ollie” in the UK and Ireland on January 11, 2019. North American plans — including 2018 Oscar-qualifying bookings — are yet to come.
The full Festival program will be announced on August 30.
