For about a half minute of the trailer for the latest Amazon series “Forever,” June (Maya Rudolph) and Oscar (Fred Armisen) seem really, truly happy. From their apparent meet-cute to what looks like one of their first dates, the two look like the kind of pair to build a TV show around.
Then, as this first look turns and the couple settles in their Riverside community, they really become the kind of pair to build a TV show around. Bring on the existential messiness of love, coming to an Amazon Prime Video account near you a lot quicker than you’d expect. (In addition to the trailer, “Forever” also picked up an official release date less than a month and a half from now.)
It might not be the gut punch of the “Married Life” sequence from “Up,” but with a little assistance from some melancholy piano and slide guitar, June and Oscar’s tidy marriage goes from magical to familiar in about a minute and a half. This is what trailers should be: a window into the thematic foundation of the show and a quick, specific-light overview of what to expect from the show to come.
For “Forever,” Emmy-winning “Master of None” co-creator Alan Yang serves in the same role here, alongside fellow “Parks and Recreation” alum Matt Hubbard.
