Newswire: The UN names Wonder Woman an honorary ambassador

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the first appearance of Wonder Woman, the groundbreaking DC Comics superhero who’s finally gotten her own movie (premiering in 2017). As befits the occasion, the Amazon has received various accolades throughout 2016, including a new origin story as part of DC’s Rebirth, and a series of Forever stamps emblazoned with her image. And Comic Book Resources reports that the feminist icon will receive an even greater honor later this month when the United Nations names Wonder Woman an honorary ambassador.

The UN recognizes that Wonder Woman has been a symbol of strength for young girls and women—she was inspired, in part, by suffragists—for decades, and since she’s served as a kind of ambassador for Themyscira in the comics, the move just made sense.
