‘Boy Erased’ Star Theodore Pellerin Joins Netflix’s ‘The OA’ (Exclusive)

Theodore Pellerin has been cast in Netflix’s “The OA,” TheWrap has learned exclusively.

Pellerin will star as a character named Liam, an 18-year-old who has persisting hallucinations, in three episodes in the upcoming season.

“The OA” is an American mystery drama which debuted in December and stars Brit Marling, Emory Cohen, Scott Wilson, Phyllis Smith and Alice Krige. It follows a young woman named Prairie, who was missing for seven years, but now calls herself “The OA” — plus, she can now see, even though she was blind before her disappearance.

Pellerin will star in “First Light,” which also features Stefani Scott, and will premiere at SXSW in the Narrative Spotlight Section.

Pellerin was recently named one of the Rising Stars to Watch at the Toronto International Film Festival and will next be seen in Joel Edgerton’s “Boy Erased” opposite Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe. He also recently won a Gémeaux Award for Best Supporting Youth Actor for his role on “MED.”

‘Eastern Promises’ Sequel Set to Film in Spring

“Body Cross” is written by original screenwriter and “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight.

Just in time for renewed fears of Russia’s growing influence, production is set to begin on “Body Cross,” the follow-up to David Cronenberg’s Russian gangster thriller “Eastern Promises,” starring Viggo Mortensen and Vincent Cassel. The script is written by original screenwriter Steven Knight (“Peaky Blinders,” Tom Hardy’s “Taboo”), but no word on Cronenberg’s involvement.

In an interview with IndieWire Knight gave in 2014, the writer expressed high hopes for the project: “I can say the script for the second one is much better that the first. Honestly it’s one of the things I’ve written that I most like and it’s driving me mad… so I’ve got to get it made.”

An earlier attempt at a remake was stymied by budget disagreements with Focus Features, Cronenberg told IndieWire in 2012. “I really wanted to see Nikolia go back to Russia, because one of the things I wanted in the first movie was that you see a bunch of Russians in London but you never see them in Russia. In other words you experience their exile and they are trying to recreate some of Russia within London,” he said.

The casting notice for “Body Cross,” however, tells a  much different story: “The sequel picks up where the 2007 film left off — with the incompetent underboss Kirill thinking that he and his henchman driver Nikolai really have inherited the throne from his crime-lord father, without knowing that Nikolai is actually a clandestine agent working undercover in Russia’s federal security service.”

The return of Kirill and Nikolai suggests Mortensen and Cassell are on board to reprise their roles. No mention of an email hacking sub-plot, but there’s still time.

‘It’s Only the End of the World’ Director Xavier Dolan on His Love of ‘Tough Protagonists’

Xavier Dolan, a French-Canadian filmmaker with a penchant for gritty, emotionally open characters, made his newest movie,”It’s Only the End of the World,” after being drawn to the universal aspects of the characters in a stage play.

“They’re not your go-to heroes,” Dolan told TheWrap founder and editor-in-chief Sharon Waxman at a post screening Q&A on Wednesday. “These are tough protagonists; they lie, they scream, they cry … they’re tough — but aren’t we all? We conceal things, we’re not always open books, its hard to be honest emotionally. That’s what drew me to this endeavor.”

Dolan, whose film is Canada’s submission for Best Foreign Language Film, said one of the other thorny challenges of shooting the film was deciding how to adapt the material from its origins as the stage play “Juste la fin du monde by the late playwright Jean-Luc Lagarce.

“After a few days … it became sort of obvious that we were doing too many wide shots,” Dolan said of his film which explores the inner workings of a family beset with unexpected tragedy and the often painful, sometimes angry dynamics within.. “It was like we were filming theater.”

So Dolan employed a visual style filled with close-ups, an unrelenting approach that’s almost claustrophobic — something he said was necessary to honor the playwright’s intention.

“The thing with that playwright’s vernacular that’s very interesting is it seems like there’s an irony in that language: ‘I’m using words, a lot of words, to say everything except that which matters.’ How can you mirror that with filmmaking?” he said.

“There’s so much dialogue, the film is so verbose, and there are so many layers of information that are disguised in words, it felt necessary to come as close as we could to their faces and eyes … the actors were so expressive it felt just right to be that close.”

That’s especially true when you have actors like Marion Cotillard, Lea Seydoux, Nathalie Baye, Gaspard Ulliel and Vincent Cassel.

The story centers on Louis, a gay playwright (Ulliel), who returns home after 12 years,with grim news for his family: He’s dying of an unspecified terminal illness. Resentment and bitterness rise to the surface on one fateful afternoon, as he interacts with his sister Suzanne (Seydoux), his mother Martine (Baye), his brother Antoine (Cassel) and Antoine’s wife, Catherine (Cotillard), in the crowded space and time of one home and one day.

“You know very little about the characters — you know nothing, actually,” Dolan said. “The environments are almost permanently obscure. You don’t have descriptions, you don’t have atmosphere. The one thing that’s clear is that all of them are bruised beings who are aching and are all concealing a lot of pain, bitterness. They have a lot of problems, lots of issues. They are hard to love but they do have love in themselves.”

Dolan, 27, has acquired an enfant terrible reputation in the film world; “Mommy,” “Laurence Anyways” and “Tom at the Farm” have all received wide acclaim and have helped make Dolan a director to watch. And “It’s Only the End of the World” won this year’s Cannes Grand Jury Prize — runner-up to the Palme d’Or.

He’s more than a blip on Hollywood’s radar; his next project, “The Death and Life of John F. Donovan,” will star Kit Harington, Kathy Bates, Thandie Newton, Natalie Portman, Ben Schnetzer and Susan Sarandon.

He described the film, his first in English, as “a story of a TV star in the 2000s who gets framed by the media and sees his life and professional career destroyed by a sex scandal … sort of a reflection on diversity and identity in Hollywood.”
