Neil Burger, the director of this month’s “The Upside” and “Divergent,” will move back to young adult sci-fi for his next feature film.

AGC Studios will fully finance and co-produce the thriller “Voyagers” for Burger to direct, the company’s chairman and CEO Stuart Ford announced Thursday.

Burger will direct from his own original screenplay, and he’ll also produce under his Nota Bene Productions banner. Basil Iwanyk and Brendon Boyea will produce via Thunder Road Films. Ford and AGC’s Head of Film Greg Shapiro are onboard as executive producers. “Voyagers” begins production this spring and is actively casting its key roles.

“Voyagers” focuses on 30 children sent into space on a multi-generational mission to reach and populate a newly discovered planet. After the adult captain of the mission is mysteriously killed, the young crew descends into chaos, reverting to a primitive, tribal state of being, and giving in to their most feral and animal desires.

“The box office track records of Neil and Basil speak for themselves and we’re very excited to be going on this sci-fi journey with them,” Ford said in a statement. “‘Voyagers’ promises to be a highly sophisticated and commercial feature film.”

“We are very fortunate that Neil has entrusted Thunder Road and AGC to bring this story to the big screen,” Iwanyk said in a statement. “It has all the elements of what have made Neil’s movies so successful – intelligent, emotional, provocative, and deeply human at the same time.”

“Dear White People” producer Effie Brown is returning to indie film and will produce a female-fronted action comedy titled “We Real Cool.”

AGC Studios will finance and co-produce the film along with Brown and Leah Natasha Thomas, the company announced today.

AGC’s CEO Stuart Ford, Greg Shapiro and Glendon Palmer will serve as executive producers. Melissa V. Murray, a graduate of Ghetto Film School and a Sundance Ignite Fellow alum, will make her feature film writing and directing debut with “We Real Cool.”

The project is casting and will go into production early next year.

Per the film’s logline, the story involves college-bound Summer, Jordan and Aurora, who are in for the night of their lives when they attend a party in Brooklyn where things get dicey. With no phones, no money and the train system on the fritz, these Harlem natives have to battle, conspire and cajole their way back home after being implicated in a murder and every neighborhood goon looking to cash in on the bounty on their heads.

“So many people talk a good game about inclusion and hiring women but rarely do they really follow through,” Brown said in a statement. “Stuart Ford and AGC did just that. In fact he doubled down – not only are they giving a talented first time queer Black female director her break by financing her film but AGC are also committed to leveling the Hollywood playing filed by supporting an all Black female producing team. This is how you make meaningful change in the industry. We can’t wait to get started.”

The deal was brokered by ICM and AGC’s Palmer and negotiated by AGC’s VP of Legal & Business Affairs Anant Tamirisa on behalf of AGC, by Darrell Miller of Fox Rothschild LLP on behalf of Effie Brown, and by First Friday Entertainment and Greenberg Glusker Fields Claman & Machtinger LLP.
