Netflix Originals Boss ‘Not Aware of Any Conversations’ to Save ‘Timeless’ or ‘Shadowhunters’

Don’t count on Netflix to resurrect “Timeless” or “Shadowhunters.”

Cindy Holland, VP of Original Content for the streamer, told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour on Sunday that she was “not aware of any conversations” to save either show, despite significant fan outcry at both shows’ cancellations.

Despite passionate and dedicated fanbases, “Timeless” and “Shadowhunters” got the the axe from NBC and Freeform, respectively, when low ratings failed to justify keeping either series on the air. In the weeks since, loud fan campaigns have cropped up, calling on Netflix to save both shows from disappearing entirely.

Holland said she gets “probably a hundred emails a day” from “Shadowhunters” fans asking her to pick up the series, but has not heard any significant talks considering the possibility.

The “Timeless” announcement is in line with what series co-creator Shawn Ryan said earlier this month when he tweeted that producers at Sony Pictures Television had failed to find a new home for the show before cast deals expired.

Holland also discussed Netflix’s decision to cancel “Everything Sucks,” the ’90s-set high school dramedy. While fans of the show were surprised by the streamer’s choice not to renew the show for a second season, Holland said the show failed to attract a sizable viewership.

“It had a passionate and good audience coming in but what we were finding is that there were far fewer people than average who were completing a season,” she said. “And so when we looked at what it would take, how many viewers we would need to be successful with a Season 2, we found that the audience size really just wasn’t there.”

‘Shadowhunters’ to End After 3 Seasons With 2-Hour Finale

Freeform’s “Shadowhunters” will end with Season 3, the network said Monday. The 12-episode second half to the final season will air in 2019 with a 2-hour series finale.

“We are very proud of Shadowhunters, a series that broke new ground in the genre world and became a fan favorite,” Freeform said in a statement Monday.

“However, along with our partners at Constantin, we reached the very difficult decision not to renew the show for a fourth season,” the statement continued. “But, as big supporters and fans ourselves, Freeform insisted on and championed the filming of a special two-part finale that would give devoted fans a proper ending. The twelve episodes will air in spring of 2019. We want to thank our talented creators, producers, cast and crew along with our colleagues at Constantin for their hard work and dedication and to Cassie Clare for her incredible book series. We look forward to the final chapter of this breakthrough drama.”

“Shadowhunters” star Katherine McNamara teased the Freeform drama’s upcoming finale in a recent interview with TheWrap, saying that fans can expect death and “brutality” in the season’s final moments.

“You can expect death, you can expect a lot of brutality,” McNamara told TheWrap’s Stuart Brazell.

“In Episode 19 it got really bloody, and that continues. There are a few scenes in here that are among the top few scenes that I’ve ever shot for anything,” the actress said. “My favorite stuff. The show itself, the production value, and the story, the brutality, and the emotional intensity of the show just keeps rising.”

After recovering from a busy weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, “Shadowhunters” actress Katherine McNamara spoke with TheWrap about the upcoming third season of the iconic Freeform fantasy series — and the possibility of a musical episode!

Many “Shadowhunters” fans have expressed their fondness for the idea of hearing McNamara’s character, Clary Fray, sing a tune while slinging her sword. McNamara herself said that showrunners “keep joking about a musical episode.” Also, her co-star, Alberto Rosende, actually did sing in Season 2. Though perhaps likely, McNamara said, “anything is possible.”

Another topic that came up was how “Shadowhunters” found success when the 2013 film, “The Mortal Instruments,” (both based on the book series by Cassandra Clare) fell flat. McNamara believes film was “not the right medium through which to tell this story.”

“There’s so many characters, and there’s so much going on in this story. There just simply isn’t enough time to do so in a film setting,” she said. “With TV, we have the advantage of spending 13 or even 20 hours on something that they [filmmakers] only had an hour and a half or so to do.”

You can watch the full interview with Katherine McNamara above. The Season 2 finale of “Shadowhunters” will air Monday, Aug. 14 on Freeform.

Shadowhunters” viewers might not believe what they’re about to see.

Dominic Sherwood, who plays Jace on the Freeform series, told TheWrap that tension continues to build between his character and villain Sebastian (Will Tudor) as the show nears the Season 2 finale. Indeed, this is likely related to the cast revealing at Comic-Con that a key character will die in the finale.

“It’s dark — we’re approaching the end of the season now, so we’re coming to this big climax,” Sherwood said in an interview with TheWrap. “It’s one of those [moments of], ‘Oh, my God — that’s happening? Wow, cool!’ It’s pretty intense, and I think people are going to be pretty shocked.”

“It’s going to start ramping up more and more and more, and we’ll discover more about who Sebastian is and why he’s such a creepy mo-fo,” the actor continued. “There’s a lot of information to come in the next couple of episodes — a lot of passion, a lot of emotion, danger, heartbreak. I was heartbroken when I read the scripts, so I’m excited for people to see it.”

Fans recently got to experience a popular moment from Cassandra Clare’s book series when Jace and Clary kissed on the show during their visit to the Seelie Court, and Sherwood was aware that viewers’ expectations would be high.

“When you do the big scenes that people are waiting for in the books, there is a lot of pressure to get them right,” Sherwood said. “You really have to ground yourself and take some time and make sure we do justice to the fans who’ve been there since well before this was even a TV show, since Cassie wrote these books.”

Sherwood wouldn’t reveal much about what’s next for Jace and Clary, but it’s clear that trouble is afoot for Clary and Simon (Alberto Rosende), who recently put their romance on ice.

“Clary is so incredibly loyal, as is Simon, so that’s why this is going to be so hard for Simon,” he said. “When he loves, he loves with his entire heart.”

“Shadowhunters” airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on Freeform.
