Willie Geist Says He ‘Carries a Small Taser’ Because of Interview Subjects Like R Kelly

“Morning Joe” co-host Willie Geist offered his effusive praise to CBS News’ Gayle King on Wednesday, telling the network’s late-night host Stephen Colbert that interview subjects like R. Kelly were why he carried around a “taser” before big sit-downs.

“All hail Gayle. Right?” Geist said. “Interviews like that are why I carry a small taser with me at all times. You sometimes gotta have to get up and neutralize the threat a little bit.”

Geist went on to say that the image of King sitting unaffected as Kelly stood and berated her was destined to become “iconic.”

Geist was far from alone in his praise for King, who is in fact a network rival. Even over on Fox News, host Jesse Watters praised her performance despite confusing King with “Good Morning America” host Robin Roberts. (He later apologized).

On Wednesday, King owned the news cycle both for conducting a highly-charged interview with the musician who is facing multiple charges of felony sexual abuse and for maintaining her composure during the most emotional moments.

At one point, Kelly stood and berated King while she sat motionless. “Quit playin’. I didn’t do this stuff. This is not me,” Kelly said, staring directly into the camera. “I’m fighting for my f–ing life.”

On Twitter, many of King’s industry colleagues and other high profile influencers agree with Geist and Watters’ assessments

“There’s a lot going on in these R. Kelly clips. But one thing that jumps out is how direct, super clear and no frills these questions are by @GayleKing,” director Ava DuVernay said on Twitter. “She’s asking exactly what most of us would ask if we were in her seat. Crazy how refreshing it is. Speaks to how rare it is.”

“This is wild. @GayleKing is again teaching a master’s class in interviewing. She remains so calm and focused while @rkelly loses it,” added PBS White House correspondent Yamiche Alcindor.

The set of “Morning Joe” had a muted reaction to President Trump’s two hour address to the Conservative Political Action Conference over the weekend. On Monday, co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski dismissed the speech as “rambling” and without “vision.”

“He’s firing up his base with that highly partisan appeal,” Brzezinski said in near monotone. “Donald Trump gave the longest speech of his presidency at CPAC on Saturday. There was no vision for America. He just ran through a list of grievances.”

“He was rambling a lot,” she added, while also noting that he used “profane language.”

Scarborough called Trump’s continuing obsession with his inauguration crowd size “cute.”

“It was kind of cute. He was going back to his crowd size at the inauguration, gosh for like 15 minutes maybe,” said the former GOP Congressman.

In his speech, which spanned more than two hours, Trump went through all the classics from his campaign and highlights of his ups and down as president.

The president was frequently interrupted by standing ovations from CPAC rally-goers, which included familiar chants like “lock her up” and “build the wall.”

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

The set of “Morning Joe” mocked President Trump relationship’s with North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong Un on Monday, telling viewers that the two might as well exchange Valentine’s Day cards as part of the love fest.

“Did the president say that he loved Kim Jong Un again this weekend?” Scarborough asked. “Did they send each other a Valentine’s card?”

Scarborough then invoked the death of University of Virginia college student Otto Warmbier, who was captured and held in North Korea for more than a year before returning back to the U.S. with severe neurological damage. Warmbier died a short time later in June 2017.

“[Kim] killed an Ohio college student, brutalized him, killed him, sent him back to the United States brain dead where he died because what he took a poster? This is who Donald Trump loved and adores and worships,” Scarborough continued. “That’s screwed up.”

The show also noted how the president has consistently refused to address a plot to kill multiple liberal journalists and politicians by a coast guard lieutenant last week.

On Wednesday, Trump will meet with Kim Jong Un in Vietnam. It will be their second summit to address denuclearization of the Korea peninsula. The two previously met in Singapore in June of last year. Departing from conventional orthodoxies of both parties, Trump has repeated professed his “love” for dictator.

“We fell in love,” Trump told a rally last September, with the president adding that he was won over by the “beautiful letters” Kim wrote him.

The rapprochement has resulted in a halt of North Korean nuclear testing — something Trump and his surrogates have frequently lauded. Though to date, there is no evidence that the country has taken any real steps to dismantle their program and as “Morning Joe” noted Monday, it remains unclear whether they could ever be persuaded.

The Trump-Kim love is a sharp reversal for the two leaders who traded barbs for most of 2017. The president frequently derided Kim as “little rocket man” and famously warned him that the United States would rain “fire and fury” upon him if North Korea didn’t knock of their nuclear testing.

The set of “Morning Joe” took their usual jabs at President Trump on Monday, telling viewers that history would remember the billionaire as the laziest person to ever occupy the Oval Office.

“Historians will record, when this presidency is over, that Donald Trump was the laziest president ever to occupy the Oval Office,” Scarborough said.

“We have seen one account after another,” he continued. “He often just hunkers down upstairs in the personal quarters. He spends the majority of his time watching cable news, tweeting, yelling, staring at TV sets like an old man that is in a retirement home.”

“Most older men in retirement homes live far more active lives than does Donald Trump,” Scarborough added.

While President Trump has said he never watches “Morning Joe,” he appeared to offer a tweeted response to their mocking just minutes later.

“The media was able to get my work schedule, something very easy to do, but it should have been reported as a positive, not negative. When the term Executive Time is used, I am generally working, not relaxing. In fact, I probably work more hours than almost any past President,” he said.

“Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski took a swipe at Fox News rival Judge Jeanine Pirro on Thursday, telling her MSNBC audience that Pirro acted like a “mob boss lawyer” during her Jan. 12 interview with President Trump.

“It’s really troubling. And I just have to say this, it’s been in the back of my mind ever since I saw that interview with Jeanine Pirro,” Brzezinski said. “It appears — some would say — that the President is doing an interview with Fox and Jeanine Pirro is acting like the mob boss lawyer here saying, ‘I sure will investigate him, sir.’”

“Isn’t the question, ‘Sir, Mr. President, are you threatening him?’” she added. Reps for Fox News did not immediately respond to request for comment.

The moment came in the context of a bombshell New York Times report yesterday from Maggie Haberman who wrote that Cohen would indefinitely delay his testimony to the House Oversight Committee — originally scheduled for next month — due to threats he and his family had received from the president and his officials.

“Mr. Cohen’s lawyer Lanny J. Davis cited verbal attacks from Mr. Trump, who had begun suggesting after Mr. Cohen agreed to testify that one of his relatives be investigated for unspecified crimes,” Haberman wrote.

In the interview, with Pirro singled out by Brzezinski, Trump cited Cohen’s “father-in-law” for unspecified crimes and Pirro even asked the president if he would be willing to name him on live television. Trump said he could not remember his name. In another interview with Jake Tapper, Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani also cited Cohen’s father in law for unspecified crimes.

“It’s about his father-in-law. We talked about Ukrainians. His father-in-law is a Ukrainian,” Giuliani said without getting into specifics. “There’s an organized crime group in Ukraine, organized crime group in Russia.”

MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe’ Ratings Surged 12 Percent in 2018 as Fox News and CNN Declined

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” grew its total viewership 12 percent in 2018, to nearly 1.1 million on average, while rivals Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” and CNN’s “New Day” both saw ratings drops for the year, according to Nielsen data.

MSNBC’s morning show, hosted by Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinksi, finished the year with its highest ratings — and the highest for MSNBC in the 6 to 9 a.m. timeslot in the network’s 21-year history.

The show also saw a slight 1 percent bump in the advertiser-coveted 25- t0 54-year-old news demographic, from 228,000 to 230,000 on average.

According to Nielsen data, “Fox & Friends” ratings fell in 2018 by 5 percent overall and 11 percent in the key demo. However, the Fox News staple remained in a commanding lead overall, averaging 1.5 million total viewers and 325,000 in the demo.

The picture was bleaker at CNN, whose “New Day” sank nearly 9 percent in total viewers, to 576,000, and 17 percent in the demo, to 188,000. Network star Chris Cuomo’s departure from “New Day” last May for a new primetime show only accelerated the downward trend as the network fell further behind its two network news competitors.

All three news networks enjoyed robust ratings growth in 2017, powered by the arrival of Donald Trump in the White House and a seemingly endless stream of news.

The good news for “Morning Joe” broadly mirrors the network’s overall ratings fortunes, particularly primetime host Rachel Maddow, whose show averaged 2.89 million total viewers last year, a 12 percent gain from 2017. (She still trails Fox News’ Sean Hannity, who averaged 3.25 million viewers for original episodes in 2018.)

“Morning Joe” viewership may have received a backhanded boost from President Trump himself, who often inveighs against the program and its hosts on Twitter.

Last August, he called “Morning Joe” a “dead show” with “very few people watching.” Trump’s cutting personal attacks on the appearance of Brzezinski back in 2017 dominated the new cycle for days and greatly raised the program’s profile.

Scarborough and Brzezinski frequently invoke their past friendship with Trump — who made friendly appearances on the show as recently as 2015 — and have said multiple times that Trump has evolved considerably from the man they used to know.

Joe Scarborough Unimpressed by Trump Oval Office Address: ‘He Made Himself Look Even More Inept’

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

The set of “Morning Joe” was unimpressed with Donald Trump’s primetime Oval Office address to the nation on Tuesday night, with co-host Joe Scarborough telling viewers it was more of the same and that the president would have been better off just delivering it on Fox News.

“Last night, he converted no one. Last night, he made himself look even more inept. Last night, he made himself look even more lost,” Scarborough said. “This was an address that he could have delivered on Fox News primetime and he would have reached his same audience, he would have converted the same number of people, which is zero, because if they were watching him on Fox News in primetime chances are very good they’d already be on his side.”

“And there’s a new Reuters poll out today saying that more Americans are blaming Donald Trump for the shutdown and less Americans support what he’s doing,” he added.

The criticism was broadly in line with Scarborough’s standard critique of Trump that he has offered viewers since the billionaire was elected president in 2016.

On Tuesday, the president made his case from the Oval Office about the need for tough immigration reform and for a wall along the Mexican border. Funding for the long promised barrier is currently at the center of a government shutdown, which is now in its third week. Trump has demanded Congress allocate more than $5 billion for the project. House Democrats have refused, with Speaker Nancy Pelosi calling the wall an “immorality.”

The project also went unfunded during the two years of unified Republican government on the hill as well.

“Every day, Customs and Border Patrol agents encounter thousands of illegal immigrants trying to enter our country. We are out of space to hold them, and we have no way to promptly return them back home to their country,” Trump said. “All Americans are hurt by uncontrolled, illegal migration. It strains public resources and drives down jobs and wages. Among those hardest hit are African Americans and Hispanic Americans.”

The speech offered little that the public hasn’t heard before from Trump on the subject. Reports also emerged Tuesday saying the president didn’t even want to do it, telling reporters during an off-the-record lunch that he only agreed after being pressured into it by advisers.

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

“Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski said the major broadcast networks should refuse to air President Trump’s primetime immigration address Tuesday night, saying it would be nothing short of a “stream of lies” that would further “debase” the office of U.S. president.

“Done right, a nighttime Oval Office address can unite the country in trying times. It can inspire the better angels in ourselves, but all the signs here indicate that is not what Donald Trump has in mind,” Brzezinski said. “Like they’ve done with other presidents in other times, the networks should refuse to turn over the airwaves to Donald Trump tonight for what they know objectively to be a steady stream of lies.

“Maybe that will stop him from debasing yet another one of our historic, solemn and cherished presidential traditions,” she added. “They shouldn’t run it.”

On Monday, President Trump revealed that he would deliver a primetime address from the Oval Office about immigration and the proposed border wall. The speech will be his first such remarks from the Oval Office to the country and comes as the nation remains mired in a three-week-long government shutdown over funding for the long promised wall.

Critics like Brzezinski have said Trump should be denied access to such powerful television real estate as he will use it to spread falsehoods into the homes of the American people. His regular attacks on the media have also not generally endeared executives to him either.

As of Tuesday morning, however, it appeared that all of the networks — including Brzezinski’s own MSNBC — had nevertheless decided to agree to Trump’s request for airtime. With stakes running high amid the shutdown, Democratic leaders have also demanded equal time for a response to refute the president’s claims tonight, immediately after his address.

A rep for MSNBC did not immediately respond to request for comment on the Brzezinski monologue.

In his newsletter Monday evening, CNN’s Brian Stelter quoted an anonymous television executive who put the conundrum bluntly to him in a text message.

“He calls us fake news all the time, but needs access to airwaves and cable pipes to deliver his false narrative,” he read.

Joe Scarborough Renews Call for ’25th Amendment’ Solution to Remove Trump (Video)

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

Joe Scarborough renewed his call for a “25th amendment” solution to Donald Trump on “Morning Joe” Thursday, reviving a polarizing idea that the president could be removed from office if the majority of his cabinet and the vice president declare him unfit to continue service.

Scarborough said Trump’s rambling 90-minute press conference on Wednesday — complete with a printout of his famous “Game of Thrones” inspired fan art — was another reminder that he was mentally unfit for the job.

“If we had a cabinet that was filled with people with more character — so many that had character have been fired — and if we had a House and Senate that took their job seriously, there would be people going up to the White House this morning saying ‘Mr President questions abound whether you are fit for this office. If this continues we are going to ask this cabinet to take a vote on whether you are fit for office and invoke the 25th amendment,’” Scarborough said.

Scarborough then said that if any of Trump’s 44 predecessors had behaved in a similar fashion, people would be saying the same thing.

“People are going to say ‘oh this is a bridge too far,’” he continued. “If any of the 44 presidents had behaved that way then those questions would have been raised. If Barack Obama had done that in 2013 those questions would have been raised by Republicans. They probably would have tried to start impeachment hearings … He is not fit. He is not acting fit.”

It’s far from the first time Scarborough has invoked the controversial idea. In October 2017, Scarborough went through a 25th amendment kick after a series of “Trump is melting down” pieces in the national press, in which he or his show suggested the move on at least three separate broadcasts.

“There’s something called the 25th amendment that they’re going to have to start looking at,” Scarborough on Oct. 11, 2017. “This is not acceptable as the status quo.”

But for all the bluster from Scarborough and other critics, the move is not known to have ever been attempted, and in 2019 there is no evidence it is seriously on anyone’s radar in Washington.

Joe Scarborough closed out the last Friday of 2018 by publicly airing his personal doubts about the long rumored Trump N-word tape, saying that the private Trump he knew before the presidency did not make racially insensitive comments.

“He did not say racially insensitive things, at least around us, behind closed doors. In fact if you just look at the women who he dated and continued to date, it certainly goes against that,” Scarborough said on set. “That was not a part of Donald Trump’s personality.”

Scarborough cited more than a decade of personal experience he and “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski had with the billionaire before his improbable rise to the White House and offered that his brand of racially divisive politics was a new feature of Trump’s persona.

The line came during an interview with New Yorker staff writer Patrick Radden Keefe, whose newly published 12,000+ word deep dive into the history of Trump, Mark Burnett and “The Apprentice,” made the rounds online yesterday.

Keefe also said that his interviews with former show insiders led him to believe that, while there may be thousands of hours of unseen Apprentice footage, the N-word tape was probably a myth.

“There’s been a lot of speculation about Trump using the N-Word,” Keefe told Scarborough. “I don’t know what I don’t know but having talked to a whole bunch of people about this, but I came out believing that tape doesn’t exist.”

Rumors of an N-word tape have dogged Trump for years and were stoked again by former White House aide and Apprentice contestant Omarosa Manigault, who sad in her most recent book “Unhinged,” chronicling her time in the White House, that the N-word tape was real and that Trump said the word “multiple times” while on set.

Mika Brzezinski apologized Friday on “Morning Joe” after calling Mike Pompeo a “butt-boy” for Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman after the Secretary of State defended him on “Fox & Friends” earlier this week.

“The term is crass and offensive and I apologize to everyone, especially the LGBTQ community and to my colleagues for using it. It was a mistake,” Brzezinski said. “But I just wanted to say on camera, looking the viewers straight in the eye, I am really, really sorry.”

The “Morning Joe” host added that her late father — former National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski — would have found the remarks “unbecoming and disrespectful,” and would have berated her as well.

It’s the second apology from Brzezinski for the remarks which metastasized quickly after first being uttered by her at the end of the show Wednesday.

During the broadcast, Brzezinski took issue with Pompeo’s continued defense of Bin Salman, even as an avalanche of evidence now says the royal was intimately involved in the killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

“Why doesn’t Mike Pompeo care right now?” Brzezinski demand. “Are the pathetic deflections that we just heard when he appeared on ‘Fox and Friends,’ is that a patriot speaking, or a wannabe dictator’s butt-boy? I’m dead serious. I’m asking, are these the words of a patriot?”

The issue blew up on Twitter and was fueled Thursday by both Brzezinski’s failure to appear on set (something Joe Scarborough said was due to a “long planned family event”) and President Trump’s decision to tweet his thoughts on the matter as well.

“If it was a Conservative that said what ‘crazed’ Mika Brzezinski stated on her show yesterday, using a certain horrible term, that person would be banned permanently from television,” Trump said. “She will probably be given a pass, despite their terrible ratings.”

Brzezinski’s apology and the weekend now likely will put the issue to rest.

Mika Brzezinski failed to appear on “Morning Joe” Thursday with co-host Joe Scarborough making sure to note at the top of the show that it was due to a pre-planned family event.

“She’ll be back with us tomorrow,” he added, before moving on to introduce the usual show regulars. Scarborough really wanted to let “Morning Joe” viewers know about this family event — so much so that he mentioned it again in the show’s second hour.

Mika’s disappearance for this “family event,” however, comes just a day after she accused Mike Pompeo of being a “wannabe dictator’s butt-boy” to Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, after Pompeo defended Bin Salman during an appearance on “Fox & Friends.”

“Why doesn’t Mike Pompeo care right now?” Brzezinski asked. “Are the pathetic deflections that we just heard when he appeared on ‘Fox and Friends,’ is that a patriot speaking, or a wannabe dictator’s butt-boy? I’m dead serious. I’m asking, are these the words of a patriot?”

The term “butt-boy” is often taken as homophobic, as CNN political reporter Andrew Kaczynski explained on Twitter.

“Butt-boy is a homophobic slur, referring to act of anal sex. In this situation, Mika is implying that MBS is the top and that Mike Pompeo is the bottom,” Kaczynski said.

MSNBC declined to comment on the issue, but Mika issued a Twitter apology shortly after the show wrapped Wednesday.

“SUPER BAD choice of words .. I should have said “water boy”… like for football teams or something like that.. apologize to @SenatorDurbin too! SO SORRY!” she tweeted.

The criticism, however, continued to come in despite the walk-back.

“This is bad. Will require more from Brzezinski than a Twitterpology,” said NPR media reporter David Folkenflik. “This apology isn’t good enough. Not a simple oops moment. It’s deeply disturbing,” Fox & Friends meteorologist Janice Dean added.

The “buttboy” moment happened during the show’s final 30 minutes Wednesday, while the gang on set dissected an interview Pompeo gave to “Fox & Friends” that same morning. During his appearance, Pompeo defended Bin Salman and continued to insist — despite an avalanche of evidence to the contrary — that it was still not clear whether the Crown Prince was involved in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

“He’s debased himself,” Scarborough thundered in concurrence. Both hosts also offered praise for “Fox & Friends” for pressing Pompeo over Khashoggi.

Per usual, the “Morning Joe” set offered broad criticism of the Trump administration. Also Wednesday, Joe and Mika mocked the president’s public argument with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer in the Oval Office Tuesday, calling Trump a “buffoon” and comparing him unfavorably to Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

“This is the type of wretched behavior that led to the Democratic landslide last month. There is no upside for Trump or his minions after that,” Brzezinski said. “Instead, Mr. Trump embarrassed himself. He weakened Republican’s hand in the budget talks and drove a wedge between himself and the Senate Republicans whose support he will need if he is impeached by the house.”

Totally agree with you -SUPER BAD choice of words .. I should have said “water boy”… like for football teams or something like that.. apologize to @SenatorDurbin too! SO SORRY! https://t.co/zIqsGdK3Tk

The set of “Morning Joe” opened up Wednesday with some mockery of President Trump’s very public argument with House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer the previous day.

On set, co-host Mika Brzezinski rubbed in some extra salt in case the president was watching, by contrasting his personal character unfavorably to that of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

“This is the type of wretched behavior that led to the Democratic landslide last month. There is no upside for Trump or his minions after that,” she said. “Instead, Mr. Trump embarrassed himself. He weakened Republican’s hand in the budget talks and drove a wedge between himself and the Senate Republicans whose support he will need if he is impeached by the house.”

“Contrast the buffoon we saw yesterday with the quiet heroism and professional of Robert Mueller, whose valor as a marine has been the through-line of his entire career,” Brzezinski added.

Also on hand, Joe Scarborough went into a lengthy explainer lauding Mueller’s Vietnam service — a war Donald Trump skipped out on as a young man as a result of “bone spurs.”

“Robert Mueller volunteered for the Marines after Princeton, but get this. He was at first ruled medically unfit,” said Scarborough, while also noting the former FBI director won a bronze star for his valor at Mutter’s Ridge. “Instead of saying that he had bad feet, bad knees, he spent the next year rehabbing his injured knees … so he could go to Vietnam.”

On Tuesday, Joe, Mika and all Americans got a look at what divided government in Washington will look like after Trump met with “Chuck and Nancy” in the Oval Office. As Vice President Mike Pence sat in frozen silence, Trump, Pelosi and Schumer traded barbs over federal funding for his wall along the Mexican border.

If left unresolved, the issue could result in a government shutdown. While Pelosi warned there would be consequences for a “Trump shutdown,” the real estate magnate ultimate embraced the term.

“If we don’t get what we want, one way or the other … I will shut down the government, absolutely,” Trump said. “I am proud to shut down the government for border security.”

The set of “Morning Joe” offered a startling admission Monday, telling viewers that not only was Trump aware his attacks on critics were often racism, but that he admitted as much to the in private in the past.

“We confronted [Donald Trump] about the birtherism,” said show co-host Mika Brzezinski. “We said it was bad. It’s wrong and he said in a low voice ‘I know it’s bad, but it works.’ Racism in his mind works. That’s what he told us.”

Fellow co-host Joe Scarborough offered a pointed eyebrow raise and seemed a bit taken aback by the disclosure. He didn’t confirm or deny the incident on-air.

“We’ll see if it works tomorrow. I’m not so sure it will,” he said before the pair moved on. With election day around the corner, Trump’s closing argument has mostly focused on immigration fears, like a caravan of illegal migrants coming from Mexico, which critics have accused of being racist dog whistles.

Reps for the pair at MSNBC declined to comment or offer any additional details. Both Joe and Mika were known to be chummy with Trump before he became president and the show has taken heat in the past for it’s softball treatment of the billionaire in 2015.

President Trump has long been accused by critics of lobbing racist attacks against his opponents, something his defenders have been forced to deny (with varying degrees of forcefulness) over the years.

The president’s first major foray into racially charged politics came during the second term of Barack Obama, when the real estate billionaire spent years asserting that his predecessor had actually been born in Kenya and was thus not a legitimate U.S. president.

The conspiracy — known as birtherism — received a willing and receptive audience on Fox News, where Trump began making regular appearances on the network’s morning show “Fox & Friends.” In the years he spent calling into the show, he rarely faced pushback from hosts Steve Doocy, Brian Kilmeade and Ainsley Earhardt. His relationship with the program and its hosts has only become tighter since his move to the White House.

Joe Scarborough Accuses Fox News of ‘Inspiring People Like This Pittsburgh Mass Murderer’

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

Joe Scarborough accused Fox News on Monday morning of playing a direct role in inspiring extremists like Robert Bowers, who is accused of murdering 11 people at a Pittsburgh synagogue on Saturday.

“People on Fox News that talk about the caravan as if this is a big election issue know it’s a lie, know it’s 1,000 miles away. [They] know that the last caravan that they whipped up a frenzy about actually only brought 14 arrests by the end of the caravan.” said Scarborough on “Morning Joe.”  “They are spreading hatred across America and at the end of the day … inspiring people like this Pittsburgh mass murderer.”

Mika Brzezinski was broadly in agreement with her co-host.

“[Bowers] also frequently posted about the migrant caravan, a major talking point right-wing commentators and President Trump and his stupid followers running for Republican seats, who tend to just repeat it because they think it will work,” she said. “They know it’s a lie.”

The “Morning Joe” commentary came a day after a Financial Times editor called for a boycott of Fox News, tweeting out that such actions were the only remedy for stopping the “poison.” from the network.

“The most effective thing Americans can do is boycott companies that advertise on Fox,” said Edward Luce.  “They bankroll the poison that goes from the studio into Trump’s head. The second is vote.”

Fox News has dedicated extensive coverage to the migrant caravan and George Soros in recent weeks. Over the weekend, the network moved aggressively to pivot from that, announcing the complete ban of Chris Farrell, who told Lou Dobbs and his Fox Business audience that Soros was controlling the State Department.

“We condemn the rhetoric by the guest on ‘Lou Dobbs Tonight,’” Gary Schreier, senior vice president of programming for Fox Business Network, said in a statement. “This episode was a repeat which has now been pulled from all future airings.”

Reps for Fox News did not immediately respond to request for comment from TheWrap.

The set of “Morning Joe” officially blamed President Trump on Thursday after a series of attempted mail bomb attacks against prominent Democrats and CNN this week.

In one of several emotional “straight into the camera” monologues, Mika Brzezinski said Trump and his rhetoric made it a certainty that this day would come sooner or later.

“We don’t know who sent the packages, but I do know in my heart that President Trump bears a lot of responsibility for rhetoric that made it almost inevitable that top Democrats and the media would be targeted,” said Brzezinski. “I want to be honest, I have been highly reactive in my emotions and fears about this president.”

She then encouraged her party to remain calm and not go into the gutter with Trump.

“As Democrats, I would speak to you now and see that we need to immediately press reset,” she said. “We know that what Trump wants before the mid-terms is a brawl, a battle of conspiracy theories, unhinged accusations and violent rude behavior. Democrats. Don’t do it. Pull back. Don’t try and intimidate Republicans when they’re at public places like restaurants. Don’t do it.”

She then criticized, by name, prominent Democrats who have encouraged confrontation like California congresswoman Maxine Waters.

“A tactic explicitly encouraged by Maxine Waters. Don’t do it. Don’t do it. Don’t say it, Maxine,” she said. “Don’t get in the gutter with this man and this rhetoric. That’s what he wants.”

On Wednesday, most other news came to a standstill after a bomb was mailed to CNN as well as former president Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. The bombs delivered via the U.S. postal service were similar to one received by billionaire Democratic funder George Soros on Monday and Robert De Niro on Thursday.

For much of Wednesday, CNN reported from the streets of Manhattan after their New York bureau in the Time Warner Center was evacuated. CNN chief Jeff Zucker also stuck the blame squarely on Trump in a statement.

Joe Scarborough Calls Trump Attacks on Migrant Caravan ‘Anti-American’ and ‘Un-Christlike’

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

Joe Scarborough condemned President Trump’s fixation on a caravan of migrants slowly moving toward the United States from Central America, telling his audience on “Morning Joe” on Wednesday that the demonization from the White House wasn’t just un-American but un-Christian, too.

“What Donald Trump is doing is not only anti-American,” said Scarborough. “I will just say this as a guy that was raised in the southern Baptist church, at least based on the bible I read, the gospels that I read, the good samaritan story that I read, it’s un-Christ like what’s going on here.”

“History will look back and Americans will look back with shame that we ever had a president like this,” Scarborough lamented. “The statue of liberty, it’s still in New York Harbor. It’s still stands for what makes this country great. Out of many, one. That has been our history for years and years, for over 200 years.”

Though Trump — a thrice married New York City real estate billionaire — has never claimed to be a biblical scholar, he made a notable effort to reach out to Christian and evangelical voters who returned the favor by supporting him to the hilt in 2016. During a speech while a candidate, Trump told an audience at Liberty University that he was fond of the bible’s “Two Corinthians” — a mispronunciation of “Second Corinthians,” which drew laugher from the crowd.

The president’s language on the migrant caravan that began in Central America earlier this month has been much clearer. On Twitter, Trump has railed against the migrants, promoting tough Fox News coverage of the event and even warning to send the military to the border if need be.

“For those who want and advocate for illegal immigration, just take a good look at what has happened to Europe over the last 5 years. A total mess! They only wish they had that decision to make over again,” said Trump Wednesday morning in his latest pronouncement on the matter.
