Sony is going deeper Into The Spider-Verse with a sequel and a female-led spin-off

Sony’s animated Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse won’t even be released until December 14, but the overwhelmingly positive response to the trailers has apparently convinced the studio to start moving forward with even more animated Spidey movies. It’s…

‘Spider-Woman’ and Other ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ Follow-Ups in the Works at Sony

Building on the buzz surrounding the upcoming “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” Sony Pictures is looking at ways to continue its expansion of the animated franchise. The studio is planning a Spider-Verse sequel that will continue Miles Morales’ story, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap. Joaquim Dos Santos, whose recent credits include Netflix’s “Voltron” series, has been tapped to direct the sequel.

The studio is also looking for other spin-offs, and one that is gaining traction is a Spider-Women film that will focus on three generations of women with Spidey powers. Though no decisions have been made, one of these characters could very well be Spider-Gwen, a breakout character from the Spider-Verse. Bek Smith will write the screenplay.

Amy Pascal will produce, and it’s likely that Avi Arad and filmmaking duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will also be involved.

These films are next up on the animated side of Sony’s schedule, and the studio continues the development of its live-action universe of Marvel characters as well.

Smith is repped by Verve and Kaplan/Perrone.

‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ will be released on Dec. 14. The movie’s voice cast also includes Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Jake Johnson, Liev Schreiber, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez and Lily Tomlin.

The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news.

Sony Dates Two Marvel Projects in 2020

Sony Pictures has planted flags for two Marvel projects in 2020, the company announced Wednesday.

The first film is an “Untitled Sony/Marvel” dated  7/10/20 and the second film which is “Untitled Sony/Marvel Sequel” is dated for 10/02/20.

The first project is most likely “Morbius” which will star Oscar winner Jared Leto and Daniel Espinosa will direct, based on the Marvel comic. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will produce with Lucas Foster. Palak Patel will oversee for the studio. Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless wrote the script.

The Morbius character was created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane and first appeared in “The Amazing Spider-Man” issue no. 101 in 1971. In the comics, Michael Morbius is a Nobel Prize-winning biochemist who is transformed into a vampire while attempting to cure a rare blood disease with a highly experimental approach involving electroshock therapy… and vampire bats.

As a “pseudo-vampire,” Morbius does not possess all the powers of an actual vampire, and isn’t subject to all the traditional limitations and weaknesses thereof, according to Marvel lore.

Morbius almost made it to the big screen before. In 2000, when Avi Arad was president and CEO of Marvel Studios, the company entered into an agreement with Artisan Entertainment to turn at least 15 Marvel superhero franchises into live-action films, television series, direct-to-video films or internet projects. Morbius would have been among the franchises.

The second project is most likely a sequel to the hit “Venom” which has grossed $779 million worldwide at the box office.
