Shaquille O’Neal Becomes Papa John’s First African American Board Member

Shaquille O’Neal is expanding his business portfolio by joining the Papa John’s team, the company announced on Friday.

The Basketball Hall of Famer and TNT analyst signed an $8.25 million three-year endorsement deal with the scandal-plagued pizza chain, according to Reuters.

O’Neal also joined Papa John’s board of directors and is the first African American to do so. Last year, founder John Schnatter was accused of using a racial slur during a role-playing call between Papa John’s executives and marketing agency Laundry Service.

The move had an immediate impact on Wall Street, with the company’s shares rising nearly 6 percent in early morning trading, Reuters reported.

“This is a triple threat opportunity for me. I am excited to join the Board and to help lead from the top, while also investing in nine stores in my home town of Atlanta and being an ambassador for the brand,” O’Neal said in a statement.

Earlier this month, Schnattner agreed to step down from the company’s board of directors and drop two outstanding lawsuits against the company he started in 1984. Schnattner will resign from the board if the independent director is named by the end of April when Papa John’s annual stockholder meeting is scheduled.

Schnatter, who still owns about 30 percent of the company, has been locked in a bitter legal battle with Papa John’s since he stepped down as chief executive in 2017 after months of turmoil following his criticism of the NFL over the player protests, blaming them for low pizza sales.

Shaq will be an investor in nine Papa John’s restaurants in Atlanta. He currently owns a Krispy Kreme Doughnuts franchise in Atlanta and previously owned 27 Five Guys Burgers and Fries franchises.

He also recently opened his self-named restaurant Shaquille’s at L.A. Live in Los Angeles,  across the street from where he used to play for the Lakers at Staples Center.

Natalie Portman heads for the stars in upcoming space drama “Lucy in the Sky,” but she finds that coming back down to Earth is a lot tougher.

In the new teaser trailer released Tuesday, we see female astronaut Lucy Cola (Portman) suited up for a mission, kissing her husband Drew (Dan Stevens) goodbye before being blasted into space.

“You got to see the vast celestial everything and it blew your mind, so now nothing makes sense,” fellow astronaut Mark Goodwin, played by Jon Hamm, tells Cola after her lengthy mission.

The pair embark on an affair that destroys Cola’s family, sends her entire life on a downward spiral and into a bitter love triangle.

“Lucy in the Sky” reunites Stevens with “Legion” creator Noah Hawley, and also stars Zazie Beetz, Ellen Burstyn, Colman Domingo and Nick Offerman.

The Fox Searchlight Pictures film is loosely based on Lisa Nowak’s reported criminal activities around her romantic involvement with fellow astronaut William Oefelein.

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

The death toll currently stands at 49 with another 48 people injured, making it in the worst mass shooting in New Zealand’s history.

Australian-born Tarrant, 28, filmed the attack on social media and was taken into custody, according to the U.K.’s Telegraph. Three other people, two men and a woman, were also taken into custody. Police say explosives were also found attached to vehicles they stopped.

The suspect, dressed in a military-style, camouflage outfit, and carrying an automatic rifle, started randomly shooting people in the Al Noor mosque shortly after 1:40 p.m. local time on Friday.

“I went up to Seattle and spent four or five days with him and I asked him 9,000 questions,” Cooper said of his friendship with Vedder in a September 2018 interview with Yahoo! Idris Elba Sees His Dreams of Becoming a DJ Crushed in ‘Turn Up Charlie’ Trailer (Video)

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

Idris Elba is squashing any lingering hopes that he’ll one day play James Bond by fulfilling his dreams to be a DJ.

Rather than swigging martinis and driving an Aston Martin, People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” now stars in new Netflix comedy series, “Turn Up Charlie,” as a struggling British DJ trying to get his break in the music business.

In the new trailer that dropped Thursday, we see Charlie hitting the decks, hitting the floor as he falls out of bed with a mystery woman, and almost hitting rockbottom as he struggles to pay the bills. Luckily, he also lands a job offer — as a nanny for his best friend’s wild 11-year-old daughter.

According to Netflix’s official description, “Turn Up Charlie” centers on the titular Charlie (Elba), a struggling DJ and eternal bachelor, who is given a final chance at success when he reluctantly becomes a “manny” to his famous best friend’s problem-child daughter, Gabby (Frankie Hervey). Piper Perabo and JJ Feild co-star.

Martin Joyce and Ana Garanito are co-executive producers. The series is co-produced by Reich’s Brown Eyed Boy Productions and Elba’s Green Door Pictures.

Elba will next be seen hosting “Saturday Night Live” on March 9. And while U.K. audiences have already indulged in “Luther” Season 5, Americans are still waiting for it to premiere on BBC America or Netflix.

He’ll also be playing a real-life DJ at Coachella in April, after being named as one of the headline performers.

In the meantime, all eight episodes of “Turn Up Charlie” Season 1 will premiere globally on March 15.

Mattel and MGM to Make a Live-Action View-Master Movie Somehow

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

Remember those old plastic View-Masters your parents (and grandparents) played with as kids? Well, they’ll soon be heading to the big screen at a multiplex near you.

Mattel Films and MGM announced Wednesday that they are teaming up for a live-action film based on the vintage View-Master toy. We’re not sure how that is going to work, but we’re definitely intrigued.

“Since the 1940s, View-Master has inspired wonder and joy in children of all ages, creating huge opportunities for storytelling,” Robbie Brenner, Mattel’s Head of Film, said in a statement. “MGM Pictures has tremendous expertise and a proven track record in capturing audiences’ imagination through film, and we’re proud to be partnering with them to bring another Mattel franchise to theaters.”

Also Read: ‘American Girl’ Doll Movie in the Works at Mattel, Original Film (Exclusive)

Mattel Films and MGM will co-produce the film. Brenner and Cassidy Lange, MGM’s co-president of Production, will oversee production.

View-Master was the first device that allowed families all over the world to escape their reality and take them places they never thought they could go. We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Mattel to create a family adventure integrating the old school turn and click stereotypic device with the modern world of virtual reality,” said Jonathan Glickman, MGM’s president, Motion Picture Group, added.

This marks the second recent collaboration between Mattel Films and MGM, following in the plastic-heeled footsteps of the American Girl brand. Films based on Hot Wheels and Barbie, starring and co-produced by Academy Award-nominated actress Margot Robbie, are also in the works.

First launched at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, the View-Master was named by Time as one of the 100 All Time Greatest Toys in 2011 and inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame.

Mattel’s updated version of the classic toy now brings the user experience to a whole new level of realism with View-Master VR.

Mark Hollis, Lead Singer of Talk Talk, Dies at 64

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

Mark Hollis, lead singer for the 1980s rock band Talk Talk, has died. He was 64.

“Mark has died after a short illness from which he never recovered,” former manager Keith Aspden told BBC News on Tuesday.

“I can’t tell you how much Mark influenced and changed my perceptions on art and music. I’m grateful for the time I spent with him and for the gentle beauty he shared with us,” Aspden went on to tell NPR.

The British rock band Talk Talk earned mainstream success in the ’80s with hits including “It’s My Life,” “Today,” “Life’s What You Make it,” and “Such a Shame.”

After the band broke up in 1991, Hollis released a solo album in 1998 but then left music and removed himself from public view.

“I choose for my family. Maybe others are capable of doing it, but I can’t go on tour and be a good dad at the same time,” Hollis said in an interview with a Dutch outlet at the time.

Talk Talk’s bassist Paul Webb paid tribute to his former bandmate via Instagram on Tuesday, writing: “I am very shocked and saddened to hear the news of the passing of Mark Hollis.

“Musically he was a genius and it was a honour and a privilege to have been in a band with him. I have not seen Mark for many years, but like many musicians of our generation I have been profoundly influenced by his trailblazing musical ideas.”

Born in the Tottenham area of London, Hollis dropped out of college as a teenager and began songwriting while working in a factory. He formed a band called The Reaction, which released just one single before breaking up. Hollis then met Paul Webb, Lee Harris and Simon Brenner — the group became Talk Talk and soon signed with EMI Records.

News of Hollis’ death prompted an outpouring of support from the music world, many of whom were influenced by the New Romantic sound of Talk Talk.

“Talk Talk, which he co-founded and fronted, were on tour with us in 1982,” Duran Duran singer Simon LeBon wrote on Twitter. “It made for a tremendous and very entertaining bill.”

“Been relistening to Mark Hollis’s dream-soaked Spirit of Eden today,” Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet said. “His influence upon music was immense and far reaching. A great presence in the modern era who took his bow far too early but has left us so much still to be moved.”

2 ‘LA’s Finest’ Crew Members Hospitalized After On-Set Accident

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

Two people were hospitalized following an accident on the set of “Bad Boys” spinoff series “L.A.’s Finest” on Thursday, a person with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap.

The cop drama starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba was shooting a car crash scene at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro, California, at the time of the incident.

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Port Police directed TheWrap to FilmLA for more details, who did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

According to the area’s local news outlet, the Daily Breeze, two crew members were hurt when their legs became trapped under a shipping container.

Firefighters quickly rescued the victims from beneath the 20-foot container about 1:30 p.m. at Berth 60 near Warehouse One, Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Amy Bastman told the Breeze. There is no update on their current condition.

The incident happened when a vehicle on set crashed into the container, which was being used as a prop, Los Angeles police Sgt. Bradley Hearn said, according to the paper.

“L.A.’s Finest” sees Union reprising her role as Sydney Burnett from 2003’s “Bad Boys II.” Now an LAPD detective, Burnett is paired with a new partner, Nancy McKenna (Alba), a working mom with an equally complex past. Taking on the most dangerous criminals in Los Angeles while skirting the rules, and speed limits, Syd and Nancy become a force to be reckoned with – on the streets, and in each other’s lives.

Chicago PD released Jussie Smollett’s mug shot on Thursday, following his arrest the night before.

The “Empire” actor is currently “in custody of detectives” after being charged with filing a false police report, Chicago PD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said earlier Thursday morning.

The official police photo shows the 36-year-old former “Mighty Ducks” child star looking somber while wearing a black jacket over a white shirt.

During a press conference later that morning, Chicago PD Superintendent Eddie Johnson said Smollett staged the Chicago attack because he was “dissatisfied with his salary.”

The charges stem from a report Smollett filed on Jan. 29 that he was attacked by two men who shouted racial and homophobic slurs and referenced “MAGA.” After releasing two former suspects over the weekend, police said they wanted to interview Smollett again — and days later declared him a suspect.

Fox network and studio, the homes to “Empire,” did not immediately respond to our request for comment on this latest development. Smollett’s lawyers also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Hours after he was named a suspect in the case of his own reported assault, Smollett was charged Wednesday with filing a false police report, a felony.

“Felony criminal charges have been approved by @CookCountySAO against Jussie Smollett for Disorderly Conduct / Filing a False Police Report. Detectives will make contact with his legal team to negotiate a reasonable surrender for his arrest,” Chicago Police chief communications officer Anthony Guglielmi said Wednesday.

The brothers were released without charges last Friday after the police said “new evidence” had emerged and that the investigation’s “trajectory” had changed course. Earlier this week, CNN reported that Chicago police believed that Smollett might have paid the brothers to stage the attack.

Alec Baldwin Asks if Trump Twitter Rant ‘Constitutes a Threat’ to His Family’s Safety

Read on: TheWrapTheWrap.

Could Alec Baldwin’s latest “Saturday Night Live” skit mocking President Trump actually put him and his family in danger? That’s what the actor wants to know, at least.

“I wonder if a sitting President exhorting his followers that my role in a TV comedy qualifies me as an enemy of the people constitutes a threat to my safety and that of my family?” Baldwin tweeted Sunday night.

The comment was in response to Trump’s blazing reaction much earlier in the day to Baldwin’s skit about his national emergency declaration to build a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“Nothing funny about tired Saturday Night Live on Fake News NBC!” the president blasted. “Question is, how do the Networks get away with these total Republican hit jobs without retribution? Likewise for many other shows? Very unfair and should be looked into. This is the real Collusion!”

He then added in a second all-caps tweet, “THE RIGGED AND CORRUPT MEDIA IS THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!”

The cold open sketch on “SNL” started with Baldwin’s Trump lying about his height and weight.

“I’m here to declare a very urgent, important national emergency,” he said. “This is a big one, so I don’t want to waste any time. I just had a great health exam. I’m still standing 6 foot 7, 185 pounds. Shredded.”

When a reporter played by Kyle Mooney noted that statistics have found that undocumented immigrants have a lower crime rate than American citizens, Baldwin’s Trump responded, “Those numbers are faker than this emergency.”

“Wall works. Wall makes safe,” he also said. “Abuelas and bebes unless you give me wall.”
