Hulu’s ‘Looking For Alaska’ Series Adaptation Rounds Out Cast

Hulu is building out the cast for its upcoming limited series “Looking For Alaska,” based off the John Green’s 2005 novel of the same name. Six new series regulars have signed on, including Denny Love (“Empire”) as “The Colonel,” Jay Lee (“American Vandal”) as Takumi, Landry Bender (“Fuller House”) as Sara, Sofia Vassilieva (“My Sister’s Keeper”) as Lara, Uriah Shelton (“13 Reasons Why”) as Longwell, and Jordan Connor (“Riverdale”) as Kevin.

The new additions join previously announced leads Kristine Froseth as Alaska Young and Charlie Plummer as Miles “Pudge” Halter.

The eight-episode series follows Miles’ as he embarks on his first year at boarding school. He soon falls in love with Alaska, who dies unexpectedly, leading Miles and his close friends on a quest to find the truth behind her mysterious death.

The series comes from Paramount Television, and will be produced by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage of “The O.C.” through their production company Fake Empire, along with Jessica Tuchinsky, Mark Waters, Green and Marty Bowen and Isaac Klausner of Temple Hill. Lis Rowinski, an executive at Fake Empire, will co-executive produce. Sarah Adina Smith (“Hanna”) is set to direct the pilot.

The project has gone through many incarnations since Schwartz first received the then-unpublished manuscript for “The Fault in Our Stars” author’s debut novel in 2005. Former Paramount Pictures boss Gail Berman originally purchased the rights for Schwartz to write and potentially direct a “Looking for Alaska” film, with then-Paramount TV president Amy Powell later helping to move the project from the feature division to TV. The adaptation was finally ordered to series at Hulu last May.

“It has been a very long 13 years trying to figure out how/whether to adapt ‘Looking For Alaska,’” author John Green wrote in a Reddit fan thread at the time Hulu ordered the project to series. “But Josh [Schwartz] cared about the book before almost anyone else had even read it, and he and Stephanie have worked so hard to get to this moment, and I am really excited.”

Here’s a List of Everything Coming to and Leaving Hulu in April

Hulu’s list of comings and goings for the month of April is out, and the roster for new content on the streaming service includes two Hulu Originals — the first season premiere of  “Ramy,” and the seventh episode of “Into The Dark: I’m Just F*cking With You,” with other highlights including Season 3 of Freeform’s “The Bold Type” and John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place.”

“Ramy,” debuting April 19, tells the story of first generation Egyptian-American Ramy Hassan as he finds himself in his New Jersey neighborhood, stuck at a crossroads between the morals of his Muslim community and the moral ambiguity of his millennial generation. “Into The Dark: I’m Just F*cking With You,” coming April 1, finds two siblings in a secluded motel, where they become subject to practical jokes of an increasingly frightening nature.

Oscar-Winning Documentary ‘Free Solo’ Now Available for Streaming on Hulu

Hulu has acquired the streaming rights to “Free Solo,” this year’s Oscar-winning documentary about rock climber Alex Honnold. The film will stream on Hulu beginning Wednesday.

Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and photographer/mountaineer Jimmy Chin directed the Nat Geo documentary about Honnold, a free solo rock climber who dreams of climbing El Capitan, the 3,200-foot peak in Yosemite National Park, without a rope.

The film also follows Honnold in his personal life trying to maintain a healthy relationship while pursuing an inherently dangerous lifestyle, as well as the cameramen tasked with trying to film what could potentially be a life-threatening endeavor every time Honnold goes out for a climb.

“‘Free Solo’ is a true masterpiece that combines awe-inspiring camerawork with the kind of authentic storytelling that Hulu viewers love,” Lisa Holme, VP of content acquisition at Hulu said in a statement. “We couldn’t be more excited to partner with our friends at National Geographic Documentary Films to add this extraordinary film to the growing slate of award-winning documentaries available on Hulu.”

The film set a box office record by breaking the best per screen average for a documentary, which was previously held by “An Inconvenient Truth.” It also was among the best per screen average movies at the box office in 2018.

Nat Geo has geared up with several other documentaries since the acclaimed success of “Free Solo,” including a documentary on the Paradise wildfires from Ron Howard, an environmental documentary produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and a documentary on the Thai Cave Rescue.

Upcoming Hulu originals include “Catch-22” from George Clooney; “Four Weddings and a Funeral” from Mindy Kaling; “Shrill” from Aidy Bryant, Lorne Michaels and Elizabeth Banks; “Wu-Tang: An American Saga” from Brian Grazer and The RZA; “Ramy” from Jerrod Carmichael and Ramy Youssef and “Little Fires Everywhere” from Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington.

Spotify Premium Members Now Get Ad-Supported Hulu for Free

Starting Tuesday, Spotify Premium subscribers will now receive access to ad-supported Hulu at no additional cost, signaling the latest partnership between the world’s biggest streaming service and the streaming home of “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

New Spotify Premium customers can get a free 30-day trial, then are charged $10 per month for both services. The offer is also available to existing Spotify Premium subscribers, who are able to immediately activate their Hulu accounts.

The $10 per month combo package comes almost a year after Hulu and Spotify offered a similar package for $13 per month last year. (Customers paying the old prices will be automatically migrated to the new prices.) Hulu recently dropped the price of its ad-supported streaming from $7.99 per month to $5.99 per month; its “no commercials” plan remains $11.99 per month.

One hangup, as The Verge pointed out, is that customers won’t receive Showtime — something that is included in Spotify’s $5-per-month student plans when they sign up for Hulu’s ad-supported streaming.

Spotify Premium subscribers will be “restricted,” per The Verge, from adding HBO or Showtime to their free Hulu service, meaning they’ll need to download and pay for the individual apps to watch the latest seasons of “Game of Thrones” or “Billions.”

The companies said the offer is available until June 10 or as long as supplies last.
