A woman accused of hacking the email accounts of Selena Gomez and an associate of the “Wizards of Waverly Place” alum faces a possible maximum sentence of nine years and eight months in state prison after being charged with multiple crimes, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said Friday.
New Jersey woman Susan Atrach is accused of hacking into the accounts and stealing digital property from them. According to the DA’s office, Atrach allegedly accessed the victims’ accounts several times from June 2015 through February 2016 and obtained stored media that she posted online and shared with other people.
Atrach, 21, was charged with five felony counts of identity theft; five felony counts of accessing and using computer data to commit fraud or to control or obtain money, property or data; and one felony count of accessing and using computer data or taking supporting documentation without permission.
The case remains under investigation by the District Attorney’s Office, Bureau of Investigation. The prosecutor is recommending bail be set at $250,000 for Atrach, who is expected to be arraigned on or before Aug. 27.
