In the no-brainer move of the week, CBS has renewed its massive hit drama “NCIS” for a 16th season. That comes complete with a new contract for star and executive producer Mark Harmon, “America’s Most-Watched Network” said Friday.
“It’s pretty simple — viewers everywhere love ‘NCIS,'” said Kelly Kahl, president of CBS Entertainment. “This show speaks to viewers of all ages, in all parts of the country and around the world. ‘NCIS” amazing characters and terrific storytelling result in some of TV’s most passionate fans.”
“Of course, none of this would be possible without an outstanding production team, and talented cast led by the incomparable and absolutely tireless Mark Harmon,” he continued. “We’re thrilled he is returning as the centerpiece of the show, and we could not be more excited for ‘NCIS” 16th season.”
This season, “NCIS” is averaging 17 million viewers per episode, according to Nielsen’s “most current” data stream, which counts a week of delayed viewing where available. “NCIS” is also a smash hit globally, and is licensed in more than 200 territories.
“NCIS” premiered on CBS in 2003. During the 2009-2010 broadcast season, it became the No. 1 drama on broadcast television, and has held that title for each completed season since.
We”ll know in a few weeks if “NCIS” can make that claim again, or if “This Is Us” stays ahead of it as the most-watched drama of the 2017-18 season.
