Late night hosts can always count on having more than enough President Trump material to fill their monologues on any given evening. But on Thursday, some hosts couldn’t handle the president’s “sh–hole” remarks, which were made during a meeting with lawmakers about protecting immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries.
“Why are we having all these people from s—hole countries come here?” Trump said, according to a Washington Post report.
That was the final straw for hosts like Seth Meyers, who literally needed to introduce the segment, “Seth Has to Walk Away For a Minute,” in order to compose himself. “At what point do you just have some common decency, some human emotion?” he said offscreen.
Stephen Colbert addressed Trump directly during his opening monologue for the “Late Show,” saying, “Sir, they are not s—hole countries. For one, Donald Trump isn’t their president.”
Noting the report’s mention that Trump expressed a preference for immigrants from Norway, Comedy Central’s “The Opposition” host Jordan Klepper said, “I know what you’re thinking: What do Norwegians have that Haitians and Africans don’t? It’s simple. They’re all white-knuckle enthusiasts about making America great again.”
Jimmy Kimmel was flabbergasted that POTUS would even say these words. “Before I share what he actually said,” Kimmel said while opening his show. “I want you to keep in mind this is an actual quote from the actual president of the United States.”
After playing reports detailing Trump’s statements, Kimmel said, “Listen, I’m sure the fact that the countries he described as ‘s—holes’ are mostly populated by people of color and the immigrants he wants from Norway are not is a coincidence. Because if it wasn’t, it would mean we voted for a racist, like a real one. And we’d have to get pitchforks and chase him out of the White House.”
“Daily Show” host Trevor Noah, who is from South Africa, had a hot take on the issue. “Personally, as someone from South Sh–hole, I’m offended, Mr. President,” Noah said. “Because not only does he think brown countries are sh–holes, he thinks, what, we’re never going to know what he said? I mean, don’t get me wrong, it might take a few weeks, but once the news donkey reaches our village, we’ll be so mad.”
