Fans were devastated after Netflix announced “Sense8” would be canceled after two seasons, but luckily they’ll at least get some closure.
The cluster will be returning in a two-hour Netflix special set to be released next year that will function as the series finale.
The official “Sense8” Twitter account confirmed the news on Thursday, posting a letter from co-creator Lana Wachowski.
“The outpouring of love and grief that came in the wake of the news that ‘Sense8’ would not be continuing was so intense that I often found myself unable to open my own email,” she wrote.
However, she added that the fan response — which includes Twitter reactions and petitions — was so overwhelming that it had a hand in bringing the show back.
“Improbably, unforeseeably [sic], your love has brought Sense8 back to life,” she continued.
Netflix confirmed that it was the fans who persuaded the streaming service to bring the series back.
“After seeing that the cancellation was a total cluster, we decided to give Sense8 fans the ending they totally deserve,” a Netflix spokesperson told TheWrap.
The streaming service announced earlier this month that it would be canceling the sci-fi drama due to what chief content officer Ted Sarandos said was “economics.”
“It was incredibly ambitious,” he said. “It broke all kinds of new ground, being a show rooted in concepts of gender and identity… They made a beautiful show. We did two seasons of it and a movie in between. Similarly, the audience was very passionate but just not large enough to support the economics of something that big, even in our platform.”
Netflix doesn’t release ratings or viewership info.
Fans were especially annoyed about the decision because, besides it being canceled on the first day of Pride Month, the most recent season ended on a cliffhanger.
“Sense8” endeared itself to audiences due to its strong LGBTQ+ characters and storylines that focused on relationships, including that of a tarns woman.
